How the Sun Influences Oral Health

November 24, 2023
sun

If the sun did not exist, there would be no possibility of there being life on Earth as we know it. In addition to being the source of light and heat, the blazing star is also tasked with protecting the master key that opens the door to life itself. Solar energy, which is required for plant life (and for the entire food chain), is provided by the blazing star. In addition, people can benefit from the powerful star's beams in a variety of ways, including the following: exposure to sunlight can help alleviate depression, aid in the digestion of food, lower blood pressure, help reduce anxiety, alleviate body pain, improve cardiovascular strength, and have an impact on dental health.

Over the course of time, prolonged exposure to sunlight has developed a negative connotation due to the fact that there are negative outcomes associated with receiving an excessive amount of a beneficial factor. Exposure to the sun's rays can, without a shadow of a doubt, hasten the aging process, as well as increase the risk of developing skin cancer, which is the most common form of cancer in the United States, as well as outbreaks of herpes simplex virus, allergic reactions, damage to the eyes, and painful sunburns. Despite the fact that there are risks involved, researchers believe that the positive effects on one's health that are associated with being exposed to a constant stream of light far outweigh the negative effects that are associated with doing so.

Vitamin D from the sun, on the other hand, has its benefits.

Vitamin D, also known as the "sunshine vitamin," is not consumed in adequate quantities by a significant portion of the population in the United States. 25 percent of the population in the United States is at risk for vitamin D inadequacy, while 8 percent of the population in the United States is at risk for vitamin D deficiency, which can contribute to dental problems caused by bone loss. These statistics come from the United States National Center for Health (2011). Both inadequate care and insufficient care are linked to an increased likelihood of developing dental problems.

sun

The sun is the best (and free) source of vitamin D; skin that is directly exposed to sunlight will start the body's natural production of the organic compound. Vitamin D levels in the body can be maintained at healthy levels with adequate sun exposure. Vitamin D is absolutely necessary for maintaining strong bones and teeth. Vitamin D is an essential component of the process that mineralizes bones. It does this by making calcium easier to absorb, which is why it plays such an important role in the process. Calcium is one of the most important nutrients for preserving dental health; however, without vitamin D, the body is unable to absorb sufficient quantities of calcium. Calcium is one of the most important nutrients for preserving dental health. It is unfortunate that this is the case because calcium is one of the minerals that teeth are made of.

People who have low levels of vitamin D not only have an increased risk of breaking bones as a result of osteoporosis, but they also may have a weakened immune system, stand a bigger chance of developing multiple sclerosis and rickets, and increase the odds of individuals dying from specific internal cancers (http://www.news-medical.net/news/34041.aspx). People who have low levels of vitamin D also have an increased risk of breaking bones as a result of

Canker Sores are bad.

Even though they are only small blisters, cold sores can cause a great deal of discomfort due to the infection they cause in the mouth. Cold sores can appear anywhere in the mouth. The unattractive growths are caused by herpes simplex virus type 1, which typically infects people before the age of ten and can be transmitted from person to person. According to estimates provided by the Herpes Virus Association, approximately six out of ten people are infected with HSV-1, which is the virus that leads to cold sores and herpes above the waist (commonly appearing on the face or lips). Even after the virus has been dormant in the body for a significant amount of time, it can be reactivated by sun exposure and cause an outbreak. In accordance with 1-800-Dentist's findings, "According to estimates provided by the Herpes Virus Association, approximately 60% of people are carriers of HSV-1. "Protecting one's lips from the sun with a product that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 is an absolute necessity, regardless of whether a person is attempting to increase their Vitamin D levels or are simply heading out for the day. The sun can cause significant damage to the lips, including premature aging and even cancer. This level of protection can help shield individuals not only from outbreaks of cold sores but also from sun damage, which can contribute to oral cancer. Not only that, but it can also help shield individuals from outbreaks of fever blisters.

The terrifying foe known as oral cancer.

Oral cancer is the common name for the condition known as head and neck cancer. Head and neck cancer is caused by an uncontrolled growth of cells that invades the tissue around it and causes damage to it, most notably in the head and neck region. Oral cancer has a mortality rate that is significantly higher than that of other cancers because it is typically diagnosed at a later stage than other cancers. The infection has already spread to other parts of the body at this point in time. According to the information that can be found on the website http://www.oralcancerfoundation.org/facts/, during the course of this year in the United States, a diagnosis of oral or pharyngeal cancer will be given to nearly 37,000 individuals. Over 8,000 people will lose their lives as a direct result of it, which equates to approximately one death every hour, twenty-four hours a day. Only a little bit more than half of the 36,000 people who have recently been diagnosed with cancer will still be alive in five years. Prolonged exposure to the sun is one of the risk factors that, when combined with other elements, can increase the likelihood of developing the condition.

Even though using tobacco and drinking alcohol is the primary factor in the development of oral cancer, sun exposure (especially at a young age or with continued frequency) also significantly increases the risk that cancerous cells will form. Using tobacco and drinking alcohol is the primary factor in the development of oral cancer. The sun is to blame for this because it emits ultraviolet radiation that travels through the atmosphere and causes damage.

In order to take advantage of the benefit and reduce the likelihood of developing complications as a result of sun exposure, it is necessary to exercise caution. This is because sun exposure can increase the risk of developing complications. One of the steps that can be taken to help deliver the ideal balance is for customers to wear a sun sensor patch that will automatically change colors to warn them when they have reached their sun exposure limit. This will help ensure that customers do not overexpose themselves to the sun.

You don't happen to have a sensor patch, do you? In general, you should spend no more than ten minutes per day exposed to direct sunlight. Exposed time should be limited as much as possible.

  • It is essential to check the local UV index forecast (which can be found at http://www.epa.gov/sunwise/whereyoulive.html) in order to reduce the likelihood of receiving an unsafe level of ultraviolet radiation exposure.
  • Applying a generous amount of sunblock is something you should do even when you are not actively working toward getting the recommended daily amount. Every individual, regardless of their age or gender, should make it a point to apply sunscreen on a daily basis as a matter of routine.
  • Because tanning beds emit powerful ultraviolet beams, which are known to have an effect that is detrimental to the health of the skin, you should do everything in your power to avoid using them.
  • It is important to avoid spending too much time in the sun during the middle of the day, when the sun's rays are at their peak intensity and can do the most damage to a person's health.
  • Direct sunlight should not be used on infants for the first six months of their lives, as this is considered unsafe for them.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

November 17, 2023

HOW LONG DO DENTAL CROWNS LAST?

The average lifespan for a well-maintained dental crown is typically around 15 years. However, when taken care of properly, it is common to see them last upwards of 25-30 years. The mouth is a complex system, and there are many factors that can affect the longevity of a crown, including a person’s oral hygiene habits, along with the day-to-day wear it is exposed to.

cosmetic dentistry, how long do dental crowns last

How Can I Extend the Lifespan of my Crown

  • Avoid clenching or grinding your teeth. This type of trauma to your crown can cause it to chip or crack. If you have a tendency to clench or grind, it is recommended that you wear a custom-made night guard while sleeping. This will protect your crowns as well as your natural teeth.
  • Always practice good dental hygiene routines, including brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. When brushing, pay special attention to the area around the crown, especially the gum line. This will help to protect the area under the crown from decay.
  • Do not bite fingernails or chew on ice, hard candy, or any other hard objects. This can cause damage to crowns as well as natural teeth.
  • Attend routine dental cleaning and checkup appointments. At these visits, your dentist will examine your crown for any signs of decay, trauma, or gapping between the tooth and the crown.

How Do I Know When My Crown Needs Replacing?

The amount of wear on a crown is unique to each individual and, though porcelain crowns are durable, they are not indestructible. A crown needs to be replaced if it is chipped or cracked. Allowing a damaged crown to remain in your mouth can increase the chances of decay forming under the crown. Though a crown itself cannot decay, cavities can still form underneath if proper oral hygiene routines are not maintained. Depending on the condition of the crown and extent of the decay, a replacement crown could be necessary. If this decay is not taken care of properly, the tooth might require a root canal. An imbalanced bite, or a crown that was not expertly made and fitted to your bite, could be a reason why a crown would fail earlier than expected. This is one of the most common causes of crown failure. Fortunately, most insurance companies will cover the replacement of a crown if it is over five years old.

More Questions?

Just because a crown is old, does not mean it needs to be replaced. Your dentist should alert you to any warning signs that your crown might fail. A well-maintained crown is an investment that can last you a lifetime. If you are in need of a dental crown, have any questions, or would like to schedule a consultation with one of our experts, please contact our office.

13 Different Causes, Home Remedies, and Treatments for Dark Spots on The Lips

November 10, 2023
lip

When you examined your lips, have you ever been certain that something was there that wasn't there the day before? A dark spot on your lip might make you feel self-conscious about your appearance and can even be embarrassing.

The following list includes thirteen potential causes for black spots on the lips.

Why do the dark patches on the lips exist exactly?

Numerous circumstances might cause a person's lips to develop black or dark patches. Many of the contributing variables to this ailment are manageable at home with simple medicine.

Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a skin condition that is relatively prevalent and provides no health hazards. This disorder, which is identified by the darkening of skin areas, is also known as melasma. The colorization could appear everywhere and could be either brown or gray.

Hormone changes are frequently the cause of melasma, and pregnant women are especially prone to getting the disorder.

It's crucial to keep them out of the light until the spots go away, however this may take some time. Topical medicines are often suggested as the next course of treatment if the problem persists.

Vitamin Shortage

Skin discoloration and uneven skin tone are both signs of a vitamin deficit. A doctor can identify deficiencies, most frequently through blood tests. Treatment plans frequently include vitamin-rich diets or a variety of vitamin supplements.

For really severe illnesses, the doctor may prescribe vitamin injections.

An Excess of Iron

A condition known as hemochromatosis is brought on by an excess of iron in the body. Iron builds up in the organs and joints in this syndrome. Hemochromatosis patients may notice a darkening of their skin in a number of places, including on their lips.

Schedule a consultation with your primary care doctor to go over your treatment options, which may involve regular blood donations or prescription medication.

Dehydration

A lack of water intake can cause the body to react in a number of harmful ways. It might, however, result in dryness and irritation of the skin on the face. On the lips, rough skin forms and layers of skin start to fall off. It's possible that you'll get scars, scabs, and other color alterations.

What is the treatment? Make sure to drink enough of water and eat foods high in liquids throughout the day to avoid becoming dehydrated.

Dental Appliances

Dental equipment including braces, dentures, retainers, and other dental fixtures can cause pressure sores if they are not placed correctly. These pressure sores typically leave black stains on the lips or gums where they were until they finally heal.

You might need to find a dentist and schedule an appointment with them in order to get the fixture fixed in order to address these sores. The spots also need to be protected from direct sunlight while they are healing.

Allergies

Another sign that allergies may be to blame is dark blotches on the lips. The medical word for allergic responses that show up on the lips is pigmented contact cheilitis.

The potential reasons of lip irritation include the following:

  • lip gloss
  • Hair color
  • emerald tea
  • make up

The following:

If you experience an allergic reaction to any of these ingredients, you need to stop using them right away and seek medical attention.

Medications

One of the potentially harmful side effects of taking several drugs is discoloration of the skin of the lips. Examples of drugs that may result in dark spots to form on the lips include those that fit into the following categories:

Cytotoxic Medications

  • medications categorized as antipsychotics
  • Malaria medications
  • Antiepileptic drugs
  • drugs that stop irregular heart beats

Changing one's pharmaceutical regimen may entail changing one's course of treatment.

Hormone Dysfunction

lip

Numerous hormonal disorders can induce oscillations in thyroid hormone levels, which can result in the development of black spots on the lips.

To acquire a precise diagnosis and develop a treatment plan, call a doctor as soon as you can.

Vessel Lake

Venous lakes are distinguished by their slender size and high appearance. The hues range from a deep purple to a very dark blue. They are often not malignant, do not hurt, and have no other symptoms, although they can be mistaken for melanoma.

Despite the fact that the precise cause of venous lakes is uncertain, it is widely acknowledged that sun exposure is a contributing factor.

Laser therapy is necessary to eradicate venous lakes.

Sunspots

Sunspots are small, hyperpigmented areas of skin that appear on skin that has been exposed to UV rays for a long time. Those qualities include:

  • a possibly raised surface that is either flat or
  • Colors can range from slightly pink, red, or dark brown to a tone that resembles the user's complexion.
  • a dry, abrasive surface
  • either a crusty or flaky texture
  • at its widest point, it can have a diameter of up to one inch.

Sun spots are regarded as a sort of precancer that might result in skin cancer. In the medical profession, they are also referred to as actinic keratosis. Schedule a visit with your doctor if you are concerned about sunspots. Chemical peels are a method that can be used to eliminate sun spots, and may be one of the alternatives they provide.

Drinking and Smoking

The toxic substances and hazardous chemicals found in tobacco products can hurt the lips and mouth. Additionally, excessive alcohol use can upset the body's normal toxin balance, which can lead to the appearance of dark patches on the lips.

The best way to stop this symptom from happening is to stop or reduce the amount of these goods you consume.

Angiokeratoma

A benign skin growth known as an angiokeratoma can vary in size, appearance, and even color. They are often dark red or black in color, have a strong feel, and have an irregular surface. Usually, elderly persons experience the appearance of these wart-like lesions.

Angiokeratomas often don't pose any health problems. As an alternative, you can speak with a dermatologist about having the growths examined for any indications of cancer.

Angiokeratoma lesions can typically be removed with laser therapy or by freezing the affected area.

Cancer

The appearance of cancerous growths on the lips can take many distinct forms. One or more of the following symptoms are frequently indicative of cancer development:

  • an asymmetrical-profiled growth
  • a development that exhibits a quick size expansion
  • a cut that is bleeding or is open
  • a brand-new advancement
  • a striking color
  • scaly red skin lesions
  • Skin with scar tissue

I was curious if it was possible to develop a freckle on your lip.

The immediate response is, "Yes." A lip freckle, also known as a labial melanotic macule, is an oval area with a flat surface that can range in color from brown to black.

The majority of people with freckles on their lips are middle-aged women, while they can also be seen on men and younger people. It almost often affects the lower lip and usually develops as a lone lesion. Lip freckles can often confused with other pigmented lesions like sunspots or melanomas. It is in your best interest to have your condition evaluated by a doctor if you see a dark spot on your lip.

How does skin cancer on the lips appear?

Although it can occur on the top lip as well, lip cancer most usually affects the lower lip. Most frequently, lip cancer is categorized as an oral cancer subtype.

Lip cancer typically manifests as the following symptoms:

  • a flat or slightly elevated, usually white, discoloration of the lip
  • a lip ulcer that won't get better
  • Lip discomfort including tingling, soreness, or numbness

Although the exact origin of lip cancer is unknown, there are a lot of factors that can increase your risk of getting skin cancer, such as the following:

  • consuming tobacco
  • Light skin
  • too much sun exposure
  • weakened immunity

By avoiding the sun in the middle of the day, using sunscreen that offers wide spectrum protection, avoiding tanning beds, and quitting smoking, you can lower your risk of developing lip cancer. There is no reason to start using tobacco if you don't already.

Homemade remedies are available for treating black patches on the lips.

Many at-home treatments promise to get rid of black patches on the lips. The skin of the lips can allegedly be made healthier or lighter by using the products listed below to remove dark spots:

  • honey
  • Liquid lemon
  • Cider vinegar (apple)
  • Rose thorns
  • White tea.
  • Curcumin
  • 2. Nutmeg
  • Glycerine
  • aloe
  • The pomegranate.
  • Cucumber nectar

The following:

You'll start by applying any of the components mentioned above many times daily to your lips. It's been reported that if you stick to this routine, the dark spot will gradually fade away. Some of these remedies need the components to be broken up or blended in order to create a paste or juice.

Skin Care is Important.

Additionally, you might consider investing in specific lip balms that shield your skin from UV rays. An alternative way of exfoliating is to use sugar or salt scrubs. Exfoliation removes dead, discolored cells from the body.

Quit Smoking.

The best way to treat any black spots that may have developed on your lips as a result of smoking is to stop smoking. The use of nicotine patches or gum is one of numerous strategies for quitting smoking. There are alternatives to quitting smoking "cold turkey," which may not be suited for everyone. If you haven't already started using tobacco products, don't start now.

When should you schedule a visit with a doctor if you see black spots on your lips?

Only after trying every other alternative should you see a doctor. There is evidence that some of these treatments are successful for at least some people, despite the fact that home cures have not undergone rigorous scientific testing. In the event that the problem persists, you should see a doctor.

If you observe that a skin lesion is growing quickly, is glossy, or is unnaturally colored or shaped, you should see a doctor as soon as possible.

To treat these issues, locate a dentist in your region. Dental issues may be connected to some of the reasons of black spots on the lips. You should consult a doctor as soon as you can if you find a dark spot on your lips and think it might be malignant.

Your Ultimate Guide to Buying Toothpaste

October 13, 2023
toothpaste

Were you overwhelmed during your most recent visit to the toothpaste aisle?

Because there are so many options available, and because every company asserts that they are the finest, it can be challenging to choose which toothpaste would serve your needs the best. Some characteristics, such as flavor, might be subject to individual preference. In some instances, you might require a different quantity of a particular ingredient in your toothpaste compared to the average person. Therefore, rather than making a decision based on what the majority of people want, consult with our Summerlin dentist about which option would be most suitable for your specific requirements.

Components Commonly Discovered in the Majority of Toothpastes

In most cases, the following components can be found in all brands of toothpaste:

  • Detergents: Since most people associate cleanliness with soap suds, many makers of toothpaste will include detergents in their products so that they will foam when they are used. This is because most people associate cleanliness with soap suds. This is a component that is not necessary, and it is up to you to decide whether or not you want it to be included in your toothpaste.
  • Artificial Flavor: There are a variety of flavors available for adult toothpaste, but the most common one is a mint-based one. Other flavors are also available. Additionally typical flavors include cinnamon, bubblegum, cherry, and grape. It doesn't matter, as long as you like it.
  • Abrasive agents: incorporating a very tiny grit into toothpaste is an effective method for removing food particles and stains from teeth. Calcium carbonate and silicates are two types of materials that are frequently utilized as abrasives. When choosing a toothpaste, you want to avoid products that include a strong abrasive because this can cause the tooth enamel surface to become damaged.
  • Thickeners: There is nothing more frustrating than using a toothpaste that is so runny that it slides off your toothbrush before you've even reached your mouth. Some types of toothpaste will have thickeners added to them in order to improve the consistency.
  • Glycerin: The majority of companies who make toothpaste will include glycerin as one of their ingredients so that it does not get dry over time.

Details on the Toothpaste Formulation

Let's look into some specifics now that you have a general idea of the compounds that can be found in the majority of different types of toothpaste.

Sensitivity

Dental disorders such as gum recession can induce sensitivity to both hot and cold temperatures. To address this issue, there are formulations of toothpaste on the market that contain components such as potassium nitrate or strontium chloride.

The way that sensitive toothpaste works is by generating a coating on the outer surface of the tooth that acts as a protective barrier, keeping temperatures from reaching the nerve and causing discomfort. This layer is formed by applying the toothpaste in a circular motion. It is possible that it will take a few weeks after beginning use of this product before any noticeable differences appear.

Whitening

Everyone has the desire to have teeth that are whiter and more brilliant. The removal of surface stains is accomplished by some whitening toothpastes by the use of abrasives. Some, like carbamide peroxide, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda, are used to whiten teeth. Other whitening products may contain these and other substances.

Be mindful of the impact that using whitening toothpaste has on your teeth, even though some of them claim to be safe for use on a daily basis. If you have started to feel sensitivity since you have started using whitening toothpaste, then you should stop using the toothpaste immediately and seek medical attention.

Tartar Control

When plaque calcifies into tartar, it is far more difficult to remove than it was before. It has been demonstrated that tartar control toothpastes containing chemical components such as pyrophosphates and zinc citrate are effective at removing plaque that is resistant to removal. There are several brands of tartar control toothpaste on the market today, and some of them contain an antibiotic called triclosan. This antibiotic eliminates the harmful bacteria that are found in the mouth.

Fluoride

toothpaste

Fluoride is a mineral that can be found naturally occurring in the teeth and bones of humans. Additionally, it is derived from the earth, plants, and rocks, and it is applied to the teeth of humans in order to promote better dental health. Fluoride has the potential to save a person's teeth. Because it is so helpful, some water treatment plants include it in their systems so that the community's drinking water can have fluoride. This is done so that the community can benefit from having fluoride in their water.

The use of fluoride dental products results in stronger tooth enamel, which reduces the likelihood that the enamel may be affected by tooth decay. Because of the potency of this component, it is able to remineralize areas that have been impacted by acid damage, thereby reversing the early stages of this damage. Fluoride should be included in the toothpaste that people of all ages use, including youngsters.

The ADA's Acceptance and Certification Mark

The American Dental Association (ADA) looks out for the consumer's best interests by conducting clinical trials on currently available toothpastes.

It is required that all toothpastes contain fluoride in order for them to pass muster with the ADA. Additionally, they may contain components that lower dental sensitivity, whiten teeth, minimize gingivitis or tartar buildup, prevent enamel erosion or prevent bad breath.

It is not possible for a toothpaste to receive approval if it contains flavoring chemicals that are known to induce tooth decay, such as sugar. In addition, in order for a manufacturer of toothpaste to have their product approved by the ADA, they will be required to provide scientific proof demonstrating the product's effectiveness and safety. This procedure could take as much as seven years to complete.

Look for the American Dental Association's (ADA) seal of acceptance whenever you go shopping for a new toothpaste. This will assure that you are purchasing a high-quality product.

6 Commonly Held Falsehoods About Brushing Your Teeth

September 22, 2023
brushing

Brushing your teeth is a well-known and widely-recognized part of overall health maintenance. Due to the interconnected nature of the body, oral health issues can be a precursor to systemic issues. If you want to get the most out of your time spent brushing your teeth, it's crucial that you do so correctly.

It's likely that you've heard a wide variety of advice, myths, and specifics about how to brush your teeth. While there is a wealth of useful data available online, I do believe it is important to dispel a few myths. This article will dispel six common misconceptions about proper tooth care and brushing techniques.

It's time we dispelled those six common misconceptions on brushing.
  1. The myth that you only need to brush your teeth once a day. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each time. From morning to night, our mouths are constantly in use for a variety of activities, including speaking, eating, and drinking. Every day, not just once, is required. If possible, you should brush your teeth after each meal, but at the very least you should do it twice a day.
  • Two: mouthwash can't replace tooth brushing and toothpaste. While mouthwash can remove some of the plaque and tartar that toothbrushing and toothpaste can't reach, it shouldn't be used in place of regular dental hygiene routines. Brushing your teeth is still the best way to get rid of the bacteria that can cause bad breath, but mouthwash can help with the other tissues in your mouth, too, like your cheeks and tongue. It does not replace the need for a toothbrush to manually remove plaque and bacteria from teeth. Accumulations of plaque are called bacterial biofilms. These biofilms can only be removed by a dentist if they are not calcified (hardened) on the teeth by regular brushing. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day.
brushing
  • Third, flossing is something you should do occasionally rather than every day. If you want to get rid of the bacterial biofilms I was talking about, flossing is the only way to reach the spaces between your teeth where your toothbrush can't reach them. The difficulty in cleaning these areas makes them ideal habitats for bacteria. The recommended frequency of flossing is twice daily, in the morning and before bed.
  • Four, brush your teeth immediately after eating or drinking: You should brush your teeth after eating or drinking certain foods, but not always immediately after. The enamel on your teeth can wear away if you regularly consume acidic foods and drinks (like oranges, lemons, and other citrus fruits). You could do more damage to your tooth enamel if you immediately brush your teeth after eating something acidic, as the acid would be brushed into your teeth. We recommend rinsing with water and waiting an hour before brushing again.
  • When I brush too hard, I end up with bleeding gums; this is a sign that I need to cut back. In fact, this indicates an even greater requirement for dental hygiene on your part. If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, you likely have gum disease or infection. As a result, you should step up your efforts to eradicate the bacteria. Try this: keep up with your regular flossing and brushing routine, regardless of whether or not your gums bleed, and in about a week, you should see a reduction in the bleeding. You can expect a full recovery from the bleeding if you stick to your regular routine (which should also include regular visits to your hygienist to get rid of any bacteria you can't reach).
  • The only way to get my teeth truly clean is with a toothbrush that has very stiff bristles (number 6). Yes, NO! Please only use a toothbrush with soft bristles from now on. Brushing your teeth with hard bristles does nothing but harm in the long run, from the enamel on your teeth to the gums. Keep in mind that you need to disrupt the bacterial biofilms on your teeth when you brush, and as long as you brush for a long enough period of time, using a toothbrush with soft bristles will do the trick just fine.

I'm wondering if there are any other teeth-brushing myths you've heard. It's fine if you bought into a few of them as you went along! This is a real thing that occurs.

Due to the overwhelming amount of data available online and the advice we receive from our loved ones, it can be difficult to determine the best course of action. And I bet there are more urban legends circulating about the state of your teeth and gums that you believe. Sure, send some of those my way! I'd be happy to dispel those misconceptions for you.

Why Quitting Smoking Will Benefit Your Oral Health

September 15, 2023
smoking

When it comes to your oral health, there are a number of reasons why it is in your best interest to give up smoking.

Even though tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of illness and death around the world, a staggering 32.4 million people in the United States continue to engage in the habit of smoking cigarettes. This is the case despite the fact that the number of people who smoke in the United States is staggering.

Despite the fact that overall smoking rates have significantly decreased over the course of several decades, the American Cancer Society (ACS) reports that more than 16 million Americans are currently living with a smoking-related disease. [Further citation is required] [Further citation is required]

It is common knowledge that smoking increases one's risk for a number of diseases, the most well-known of which are lung cancer and heart disease. On the other hand, the mouth is where many of the health issues that are associated with smoking become evident the earliest and in the most obvious way. Issues that are not as serious, such as discoloration of the teeth, can be on the same spectrum as diseases that have the potential to be fatal, such as cancers of the mouth and throat. These can range from one another.

Tobacco contains a number of different chemicals, including nicotine, tar, and others, all of which contribute to an accumulation of bacteria in the body, which is harmful in a variety of different ways. To add insult to injury, tobacco use lowers the immune defenses of the body, making it more difficult to combat the diseases that were previously mentioned.

Continue reading to gain a better understanding of the connection between tobacco use and oral health, the signs and symptoms that you should look out for, and the reasons why quitting smoking will be the best thing you can do for your mouth when you quit smoking.

The Adverse Effects That Cigarette Smoking Has on a Person's Gums and Teeth

There are three primary ways in which the use of tobacco, including smoking and the use of other products containing tobacco, can lead to problems with oral health:

  • Tobacco can reduce blood flow, which can make it more difficult for your body to heal.
  • Tobacco can make it more difficult for your body to fight infections.
  • Tobacco can increase the amount of bacteria that are found in the mouth.
  • Tobacco can interfere with the normal function of gum tissue cells, which can cause a greater risk for infection.

The oral health problems that can result from smoking can vary greatly from one person to the next. They may shift depending on a variety of factors, such as the quantity used and the length of time that smoking has been a habit for the individual.

The Lungs of a Cigarette Smoker

Because nicotine and tar are both components of tobacco, "smoker's mouth" can develop after only a brief period of time spent puffing on cigarettes. It can cause your teeth to become discolored, give you bad breath, cause an increase in the buildup of plaque and tartar, which can lead to periodontal disease and cavities, and generally result in poor oral hygiene.

If a person smokes cigarettes for a sufficiently long period of time, they put themselves at risk of developing mouth sores as well as a condition that is commonly referred to as "smokers tongue." This condition gives the tongue the appearance of being hairy and may even cause it to change color, taking on a yellowish, greenish, or brownish hue.

Inflammation of the Gums

One of the most significant risks that smoking poses to a person's oral health is the development of periodontal disease. According to the findings of a study that was published in the Journal of Dental Research, people who smoked had an increased risk of gum disease that was more than twice as high as non-smokers.

The following is a list of the most prevalent forms of gum disease:

1. Gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums that can be harmful to the body and occurs when plaque and tartar build up and become embedded under the gums as a result of poor oral hygiene. Periodontitis can be identified by a number of symptoms, some of which include gums that are irritated, tender, swollen, and prone to bleeding.

2. Periodontal Disease: If gingivitis is not treated, it can progress into periodontitis, which is a more advanced form of gum disease. Gingivitis is the milder of the two gum diseases.

Periodontal disease is an inflammatory infection that eats away at the gum tissues and can be prevented by maintaining good oral hygiene. Periodontal disease can also be referred to as gum disease. This can, over time, result in receding gums, deep pockets, and bone loss, all of which can make infections both more common and more serious. Additionally, deep pockets can make flossing more difficult. If treatment is not received, there is a chance that the teeth will become loose, that they will lose their attachment, or that they will have to be extracted.

Periodontitis can be treated in two ways: surgically and by performing a deep cleaning below the gum line. Both of these methods are effective.

Diseases of the Throat and Mouth Cancer

The most severe forms of oral cancer, which are caused by tobacco use, can affect the lips, tongue, and throat as well as the mouth. These cancers frequently result in death. According to the Mouth Cancer Foundation, the risk of developing oral cancer in smokers is approximately six times higher than the risk of developing oral cancer in people who do not use tobacco. There is a possibility that you will experience swelling or lumps around your mouth or neck, persistent sores or patches, difficulty swallowing, or repeated bleeding in the mouth and throat. These symptoms can be caused by herpes simplex virus type 1.

Attending routine dental checkups increases the likelihood that any abnormalities in the mouth will be detected as early as possible. This allows for more effective treatment. Your dentist has completed specialized training to be able to examine you for warning signs of oral cancer, and going in for these examinations on a routine basis increases the likelihood that any abnormalities will be discovered.

How to Break Your Smoking Habit and Improve Your Oral and Overall Health by Quitting Smoking

health

Quitting smoking is the most important step you can take to reduce all of these risks, and it's also the step that most people overlook. Or better yet, never start. The American Lung Association recommends the following strategies for assisting smokers in kicking the habit:

  • Just quit. If you are concerned about your health, you should not make the switch to electronic cigarettes because of the potential risks they pose. Have a discussion with your primary care physician about possible treatments, such as medications or counseling services, that could help you kick the smoking habit.
  • Make a list on paper of the individual motivations that led you to make the decision to quit smoking.
  • Create a plan for quitting, and search for a community of people who can encourage you and hold you accountable while you're making the transition.
  • Investigate scholarly topics and conduct inquisitions of your own. Find out what to expect during the process of quitting, as well as the challenges you should get ready for, and prepare yourself accordingly.

Find ways to keep yourself occupied that are also beneficial to you, and then make sure you actually do those things. Exercising, beginning a new hobby, or participating in an activity that you enjoy with friends who don't smoke are all effective methods for kicking the habit.

Quitting smoking will unquestionably result in a significant increase in benefits, despite the fact that the process of doing so may be difficult. Your lung function will improve over time, your heart rate and blood pressure will decrease, and as a direct result, your risk of developing cardiovascular disease will drop by a significant amount. On its website, the American Cancer Society (ACS) provides a Quit Smoking Timeline, which outlines the numerous positive effects that quitting smoking will have on a person's health from the moment they put their first cigarette out of their mouth to well after ten years have passed since they last lit up a cigarette in their mouth. This timeline covers the period of time from the moment they quit smoking until well after ten years have passed since they last lit up a cigarette

It is possible to reverse some forms of gum disease, and all forms can be halted or prevented entirely by maintaining a healthy oral hygiene routine and going to the dentist for checkups on a regular basis. A study that was presented at the meeting of the American Academy of Periodontology and that was published in the Journal of Periodontology discovered that the likelihood of developing periodontal disease decreased significantly with each additional year since the individual stopped smoking. This information was presented at the meeting of the American Academy of Periodontology.

What Is a Supplemental Insurance Plan?

September 8, 2023
Supplemental

What exactly is meant by the term "supplemental insurance plan"?

We are all aware that having some form of financial protection, whether it be health, dental, life, auto, or home insurance, is a good idea. This is because having coverage will give you peace of mind and will protect you in the future. However, what if the insurance plan you have does not cover everything that you might require?

You may be familiar with the term "supplemental insurance" in relation to dental benefits and health insurance. But what exactly is supplemental coverage, why might you require it, and is purchasing it really going to be worth the money that you spend on it? Let's dive in.

What exactly does "Supplemental Coverage" entail?

To put it another way, supplemental dental insurance is additional private health coverage that you can purchase to help you pay for costs that aren't covered by your primary insurance policy. This additional coverage can assist you in paying for costs that aren't covered by your primary insurance policy.

Your need to pay common out-of-pocket expenses like copays, deductibles, and coinsurance might be reduced or even eliminated entirely, depending on the supplemental benefits you pick to go along with your primary insurance plan. Some supplemental plans may also pay for a portion of services and other costs that are not covered in any way by your primary insurance policy. This is something that is not the case with all supplemental plans.

As a result of the fact that supplemental insurance is intended to fill in these gaps, policies that are designed specifically for people who are enrolled in Original Medicare are frequently referred to as "Medigap" plans.

Supplemental Insurance Definition

A policy known as supplemental insurance is one that you hold in addition to the primary benefits you already have. It can help you pay for out-of-pocket costs or other expenses that aren't covered by your primary plan, such as deductibles or copayments.

Why Do I Require Additional Insurance Coverage?

At this point, you might be wondering to yourself, "Do I really need additional insurance?" The correct response is "no." It is possible for you to go to the dentist and receive the necessary services even if you do not have insurance that covers the cost of doing so. On the other hand, the question of whether or not you ought to get supplemental insurance is an entirely separate one.

insurance

Unfortunately, this question is difficult to answer due to the fact that everyone's circumstances are unique. Consider whether or not you would gain any benefits from purchasing additional coverage. comes down to what your primary insurance covers, what services you might need in the coming year, and how much you are reasonably able to pay on your own for any out-of-pocket costs that may arise. Other out-of-pocket expenses, such as deductibles, copays, and coinsurance, as well as other fees, can quickly add up to hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in charges. You will have increased protection against these financial burdens if you have supplemental insurance, particularly in the event of an unanticipated illness or injury that may require dental care.

Who Should Consider Purchasing Additional Health Insurance?

Those who are already covered by dental benefits provided by their employer may not need to worry as much about purchasing additional insurance. Having said that, the majority of standard plans only cover fifty percent of major procedures like crowns and root canals, and they might not provide any coverage at all for orthodontics. You should probably think about purchasing some kind of supplemental plan if you or your family members believe that you will require extensive medical procedures or braces in the near future.

People who already have health insurance plans that meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act are another group that might gain something from purchasing supplemental coverage. Adult dental coverage is not regarded as a "essential health benefit" by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). Those who have purchased health insurance through their state's marketplace should probably give some thought to the possibility of purchasing supplemental coverage through private insurance.

Those who are currently enrolled in Original Medicare are the final group that may want to give supplemental insurance serious consideration. If you receive these kinds of benefits through the federal government, you may wonder if you truly require a Medicare supplement plan. The answer, which is likely yes, is that you do need a Medicare supplement plan.

Dental procedures are not covered by the original Medicare plan, unless the treatment in question is required in conjunction with certain hospital care. (Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans offer comprehensive protection by bundling Medicare Parts A and B into a single plan. Additional coverage options, such as dental and prescription drug (Part D) coverage, may be added to a participant's Part C plan. Medicare Supplement insurance policies, also known as Medigap, are able to assist in the payment of any out-of-pocket costs that are not covered by Medicare Parts A and B. Although it extends coverage beyond that of Medicare, the supplemental insurance known as Medigap is not provided by the federal government.

Regrettably, participants in the Original Medicare program frequently do not receive the necessary dental care they require. This is an even more serious problem when one considers that seniors, who make up the majority of Medicare recipients, are already at an increased risk for issues such as tooth decay and gum disease. It has been demonstrated that issues like these can contribute to or exacerbate the development of other conditions like diabetes and heart disease.

Should any of these problems manifest themselves, considering adding dental coverage to your supplemental insurance plan can help you address them as soon as they appear. You will also have access to preventative dental care, which will lower the likelihood that you will require more expensive procedures in the future.

Is It Worth It to Get Supplemental Insurance?
supplemental insurance

Supplemental insurance may end up saving you a significant amount of money in the long run if your primary health insurance policy does not cover dental care or only covers a small portion of dental care costs.

Consider the following: If you do not have dental coverage, the cost of just one preventative dental visit (which typically includes an exam, cleaning, X-rays, and fluoride), could range anywhere from $200 to $300. The majority, if not all of these costs, will probably be covered by a quality dental plan. It will also help you save a significant amount of money on any additional procedures, such as fillings, crowns, root canals, or dentures, that you may require in the future.

And what about plans known as "Medigap"? Is it worth it to pay for Medicare supplement plans? If you are enrolled in the Original Medicare program, purchasing additional dental insurance as a supplement to your coverage is a very good idea. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, in 2016, 65% of people receiving Medicare did not have dental coverage, and 49% of those people stated that they had not visited a dentist in the previous year. 19% of those without supplemental insurance who did seek dental care reported out-of-pocket costs of more than $1,000. This was the case for those who did seek dental treatment.

Given the correlation between oral and systemic health, it is of the utmost importance to ensure that you have access to dental care; however, we are aware that there are many factors to take into consideration. Make use of our advice to assist you in selecting a plan that is suitable for both you and your grin.

Identifying the white patches on your body

Sores of the mouth and the cold sores

Canker sores, also known as apthous ulcers, are frequently mistaken for cold sores, but there is no comparison between the two types of sores. An ulcer that forms on the floor of the mouth is medically referred to as a canker sore. A cold sore is a viral infection that manifests as a fluid-filled blister on the outside of the mouth, most commonly on the lips. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. In contrast to a canker sore, a cold sore is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), and if it is not treated, it can spread to other people very easily. Canker sores are more of a painful annoyance than anything else, and they can go untreated for a long time.

Canker sores are one of the most common oral conditions that people experience. The majority of people who have canker sores only experience them on an occasional basis. However, between twenty and thirty percent of those who have them experience recurrent outbreaks. Canker sores are painful mouth ulcers that typically appear three to four times per year and last for about a week each time. Canker sores that are complex are more severe in both size and pain, and they can last for up to a month.

Causes of mouth ulcers known as cankers

Canker sores are caused by a variety of factors, including but not limited to hormonal shifts, stress, and physical mouth trauma. Canker sores can also be caused by eating certain foods, such as citrus fruits. Deficiencies in essential vitamins, such as vitamin B12, iron, folic acid, and zinc, can also contribute to the issue.

Canker sores' telltale signs and symptoms

Canker sores are ulcers that develop on the gums and other soft tissues of the mouth. They can be round or oval in shape, and the perimeters are colored red, while the interior is white or a very pale yellow. Before the full effect takes hold, you might experience a stinging or burning sensation. Another symptom is a painful stinging sensation, which is especially noticeable when eating or talking.

Canker sore treatments and remedies

white patches

Rinse your mouth with a solution of baking soda and water, or saltwater, to assist in the treatment of your canker sores. You could also try applying a dab of milk of magnesia directly to the wound to see if it helps. Both of these approaches can be repeated multiple times throughout the course of a single day.

If your symptoms have been going on for more than two weeks, getting worse with home remedies, occurring several times per year, or are severe, you should schedule an appointment with your dentist. In the event that your canker sores are accompanied by other symptoms, such as a headache, fever, diarrhea, or rash on the skin, you should seek medical attention. Treatments for canker sores are aimed at alleviating the symptoms, reducing the inflammation, and preventing secondary effects like a bacterial infection from occurring. They are unable to provide any assurance that you will not be susceptible to ulcers in the future.

You could be given a steroid mouth rinse, anesthetics, or antibiotics to treat the infection and relieve the pain. These treatments aim to reduce the inflammatory irritation that is causing the infection.

Protection Against Canker Sores

Canker sores (patches) are, in general, difficult to anticipate and challenging to avoid. Fortunately, once they have made their presence known, there are steps that can be taken to ensure that the predicament will not deteriorate further. Please make every effort to avoid coming into contact with your canker sores. It's best to avoid touching them too often with your tongue and to be extra cautious when you're brushing your teeth. Steer clear of foods and beverages that are particularly acidic, spicy, or hot. Also, try to avoid eating foods that are rough on the teeth, such as chips.

Leukoplakia

It is important to take leukoplakia very seriously. Even though benign leukoplakia accounts for the vast majority of cases, there is a possibility that some cases may be precancerous.

What Sets the Stage for Leukoplakia

Leukoplakia is one of the dental issues that can be brought on by chewing tobacco and smoking on a regular basis. Inadequately fitting dentures, HIV or AIDS, and prolonged sun exposure to the lips have all been implicated as potential contributors to the development of leukoplakia. Oral leukoplakia has been linked to oral cancer in a small number of extremely rare cases.

Leukoplakia's telltale signs and symptoms

The most prominent symptom of leukoplakia is the presence of thick, white patches in the mouth that do not come off easily when scraped. These patches can be flat or take on an irregular shape, and over time they tend to become more rigid or thicker. When the condition is severe, you might have some discomfort or even some pain when you swallow. Erythroplakia are the red lesions that could appear. Leukoplakia that is accompanied by red lesions has an increased risk of developing into cancer or becoming precancerous.

Medications and therapies for leukoplakia

Anyone who has been given a diagnosis of leukoplakia should immediately give up using any kind of tobacco product. A dentist will be able to rectify the situation for you if it turns out that the leukoplakia you have is brought on by improperly fitting dentures, an uneven tooth surface, or an irregular filling surface. You may be given antiviral medications or treatments that are applied topically if it is determined that your leukoplakia is caused, in part, by a weakened immune system.

To determine whether or not your patches are cancer, a biopsy of your leukoplakia should be performed by either your dentist or your doctor. Oral surgery will be performed to remove it if it turns out to be necessary.

Leukoplakia Prevention

patches

Once you've had leukoplakia, it's possible to get it again in the future. We recommend that you schedule a follow-up appointment with both your primary care physician and your dentist.

Giving up tobacco in any form as well as giving up smoking is one of the most effective ways to prevent leukoplakia. Leukoplakia can be avoided to a large extent by practicing diligent oral hygiene on a regular basis. One more helpful piece of advice is to drink less alcohol and consume a diet that is high in antioxidants.

Oral lichen planus Oral lichen planus is a form of lichen planus that affects the mouth and causes inflammation of the mucous membranes. It is an autoimmune condition. Oral cavity lichen planus is the most common type of lichen planus, but it can affect any mucosal lining, including the lining of the esophagus and the vaginal canal. Oral lichen plus affects only 2% of the population, and the majority of those affected are older women.

The factors that lead to oral lichen planus

There is a school of thought amongst professionals that genetics and immunity could play a part. Some people think lichen planus is caused by an autoimmune disease or a cell-mediated immune response, but others disagree. Oral lichen planus has been linked to the use of beta-blockers and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These links have been substantiated by medical research.

Symptoms of Oral Lichen Planus Oral lichen planus is characterized by the development of lacy white patches. A burning pain may also be present, along with bleeding gums when eating or brushing teeth, redness, open sores, and swelling. Other symptoms include these. You may also find that foods that are too acidic or too hot bother your stomach.

Oral lichen planus treatments and medications

The symptoms of oral lichen planus can be managed, despite the fact that there is no cure for the condition. Corticosteroids can be taken orally, applied topically, or injected to reduce inflammation. A dentist or doctor can prescribe these medications. You might also be given numbing gels to help reduce any pain that you are experiencing.

In addition, the immune system of some people can be controlled or suppressed through the use of certain medications. You should be aware that oral lichen planus can increase your likelihood of developing secondary infections, nutritional deficiencies, and oral cancer. Checkups at regular intervals are something that people who suffer from oral lichen planus are strongly encouraged to do.

Preventative measures for oral lichen planus patches

You may not be able to completely avoid developing oral lichen planus, but you can reduce your chances of getting it by maintaining a healthy weight with a diet that is high in fruits and vegetables and by cutting back on your consumption of alcohol and tobacco.

Thrush of the Mouth

There is a trace amount of the candida fungus present in the oral cavity, digestive tract, and skin of every human being. These are maintained at a level that is conducive to good health by other bacteria and microorganisms. However, if this delicate equilibrium is upset, you may end up developing oral thrush because the fungus candida grows to unhealthy proportions in your mouth.

The Roots of Oral Candidiasis

Oral thrush, also known as candidiasis, can be caused by an overgrowth of candida and can be brought on by a number of factors, including the use of certain medications, such as antibiotics, birth control pills, and corticosteroids. Oral thrush can also develop in people who are pregnant, have cancer, uncontrolled diabetes, HIV infection, or dry mouth.

It is possible to have an overgrowth of candida if you are a smoker, if your dentures do not fit properly, if you are breastfeeding an infected baby, or if you do not practice good oral hygiene.

Oral thrush has the following symptoms:

White sores that are slightly raised patches and have the appearance of cottage cheese can be one of the symptoms of oral thrush.

It is common for the sores and patches to manifest themselves on the tongue or the inner cheeks, but they can also manifest themselves on the gums, tonsils, roof of the mouth, or the back of the throat.

It's possible that oral thrush will make your mouth feel as though it's full of cotton. At the corner of your mouth, it may cause you to experience irritation, pain, a loss of taste, redness, and cracking or bleeding. Visit your dentist or primary care physician as soon as possible if you observe any of these symptoms.

Treatments Available for Oral Candidiasis

Gargling with salt water, quitting smoking or cutting back on the amount of tobacco you use, reducing the amount of sugar you consume, and using an antibacterial mouthwash are all effective treatments for oral thrush. You may also be given an antifungal medication by your dentist or primary care physician.

Oral thrush may be a symptom of another medical problem; therefore, your dentist may recommend that you discuss any possible underlying health issues with a physician.

Protection Against Oral Thrush

Oral thrush can be avoided with the help of proper oral hygiene to the greatest extent possible.

Make it a habit to brush and floss your teeth every day, clean your dentures at least once per day, and maintain regular dental checkups. After using a corticosteroid inhaler, you should always make sure to rinse your mouth with water before continuing with your day. Rapid treatment is necessary for vaginal yeast infections. Reduce the amount of sugar you consume, and if you have diabetes, pay close attention to maintaining stable blood sugar levels.

3 Ways To Treat A Dental Injury

August 25, 2023
injury

What treatments are available for dental injury? In the following three various ways:

  • In the event that you sustain a dental injury, the first thing you need to do is get in touch with a dental professional as soon as you possibly can.
  • In the event that you are located in the Summerlin area and are experiencing a dental emergency, you need to call the number 702-341-9160 as soon as possible.
  • In the event that you are unable to get to an emergency dentist and a tooth has become dislodged in any way, you should go to the emergency room of the nearest hospital.

On the other hand, there are some preventative measures that you need to take in order to protect your oral health and stop any further damage from being done to your teeth and gums.

1. In the Event That a Tooth Is Knocked Out, What Should You Do?

In the event that one or more of your teeth become partially or completely detached from the gum, you should make an appointment with either your regular dentist or an emergency dentist as soon as possible.

In the event that the tooth is completely knocked out of its socket, the procedures outlined below should be carried out:

  • If there is any dirt on the root, gently rinse it off in standing water until it is clean; do not hold it under a faucet while you do this. • If there is any dirt on the root, gently rinse it off in standing water until it is clean. • It is recommended that adults attempt to gently coax the tooth back into its socket, taking care to ensure that it is positioned appropriately. This is not an activity that should be done with young children because of the potential choking hazard.
  • Do not apply any pressure to the tooth while you are holding a piece of tissue or cotton over it to keep it in place. This will cause the tissue or cotton to move around and cause the tooth to become loose.
dental

Before going to get the tooth treated, you also have the option of temporarily storing it in a small container of milk or water that has been lightly salted. This can be done before you go get the tooth treated.

In order to save a tooth that has been completely knocked out of its socket, treatment must begin within an hour, or even sooner in some cases. Otherwise, the tooth will not be able to be saved. Your best bet is to look for a dentist who is willing to travel to you and is open to seeing patients outside of normal business hours in the event of dental emergencies.

In the event that you are unable to do so, you need to check into the emergency room of the closest hospital. If there are a number of hospitals in the area, you need to call each one and ask about the dental services they provide in order to figure out which emergency room you should go to.

When applied to the outside of the jaw, a cold compress can help relieve pain and swelling and reduce inflammation. You should also consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever for the discomfort, provided that doing so is not medically discouraged (if you need it).

2. In the Event That You Crack or Break One of Your Teeth, Here Is What You Should Do

A cracked tooth needs to be treated as soon as possible by a dentist, and a procedure known as root canal therapy (RTC) may be required if the crack has progressed all the way through to the pulp of the tooth.

If the crack or cracks are not treated, they will continue to spread until they reach the area below the gumline. Once they reach this area, the tooth will perish due to a lack of blood flow if treatment is not administered.

If a crack is on the part of the tooth that is used for biting and chewing, it can cause discomfort that ranges from mild to severe whenever the person consumes anything that puts pressure on the tooth, such as food or drink. If you bite on something that causes your tooth to crack or break, you should immediately call your dentist and schedule an appointment for an emergency appointment.

The American Dental Association (ADA) suggests that in the time between visits to the dentist, there are a few things that patients can do to improve their chances of having successful tooth restoration. The following sentence outlines each of these steps in greater detail.

  • Immediately give your mouth a thorough rinsing with warm water;
  • Apply pressure to the wound in order to staunch any bleeding; and place a cold compress on the area in order to reduce any swelling.
  • Immediately give your mouth a thorough rinsing with warm water.
  • Immediately give your mouth a thorough rinsing with warm water.

If you can find any pieces of the broken tooth, you should try to find them, wrap them in some moist gauze or cloth, and bring them with you to the appointment with the dentist. If you cannot find any pieces of the broken tooth, you should not bring them with you.

If the damage to the tooth is not too severe, the dentist may be able to bond the tooth back together or use veneers to cover up the crack in the tooth. Both of these options require that the damage to the tooth not be too severe.

However, depending on the specifics of your case, you may need to get a crown in order to successfully replace the missing tooth.

In more serious cases, the tooth might have to be extracted because of the situation.

dental injury

3. In the Event That You Lose or Damage a Crown, What You Should Do to Restore It

If you have a crown that becomes loose or is broken, you should inspect the area that is affected to determine whether or not you need to make an appointment with a dentist who specializes in emergency dentistry. In the event that the crown has become loose, you need to schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as you can. In order to reattach the crown to the modified tooth, it is possible that your dentist will recommend that you make use of a temporary denture adhesive that is available for purchase without a prescription from a local drugstore. If you still have the crown and it is in good condition, you should keep it so the dentist can try to reattach it to the tooth if it is still possible to do so. In the event that the crown is lost, a replacement can easily be created from scratch.

  • If you break or lose a crown, you should visit the dentist as soon as possible to avoid having to have another impression made. This should be done within one week of the incident. This is due to the possibility of the gum tissue growing underneath the missing crown, which would render the initial impression useless. You will be required to have another impression taken if you do not visit the dentist within the next week.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should make an appointment with a dentist as soon as possible.

  • You are in significant pain
  • The tooth or crown has a jagged edge that could potentially cause injury to your cheek or tongue.
  • The crown is only partially attached, but it is loose enough to present a choking hazard.

In all other circumstances, please schedule your appointment as soon as possible within the following week.

Why Your Smile Symmetry Matters

August 18, 2023

A grin may be a potent asset when it has symmetry, elevating your whole appearance while simultaneously bolstering your self-assurance. When it comes to developing the picture-perfect grin, there are a number of considerations to take into account, and one of the most crucial of these is symmetry.

It is imperative that symmetry be maintained in order to get a grin that is both harmonious and balanced, and this is an aspect that must not be neglected. Even just one or two teeth that are unevenly spaced or have an unusual form can throw off the appearance of your complete smile. The most skilled cosmetic dentists are aware that correcting the symmetry of a patient's teeth is one of the most important steps in creating the patient's ideal smile.

A Beautiful Smile Must Always Have Symmetry.

Have you ever seen how some people's grins appear to exude an allure that is impossible to resist? There's a good chance that each of those grins is perfectly proportioned and symmetrical. When a person's teeth are properly aligned and proportioned, the result is a look that is not only aesthetically stunning but also organically appealing. They are a reflection of one another on each side of your mouth, which results in a flow that is smooth and in harmony across your grin. It is generally agreed that symmetry is essential to the development of an attractive smile because it contributes to the establishment of equilibrium and harmony among the many facial characteristics.

Not only is a grin with perfect symmetry aesthetically pleasing, but it also gives off the impression that the person smiling is healthy, young, and full of life. According to a body of research, people have a tendency to attribute more trustworthiness, friendliness, and self-assurance to those whose smiles are symmetrical. You may make a pleasant impact on others and leave them with a favorable opinion of you by improving the symmetry of your grin.

This will allow you to make a lasting impression. If your smile isn't symmetrical or you have a tooth that looks out of place, our dentist in Summerlin can help you find the most appropriate technique to restore symmetrical harmony by guiding you through the available treatment options.

How to Correct the Asymmetrical Position of Your Teeth

You are in luck since cosmetic dental procedures in Summerlin provide numerous alternatives for altering the symmetry of your teeth, which will enable you to produce a smile that is more balanced and harmonious. Dr. Cohan may recommend one or more of the following three typical treatments to help you attain the symmetry in your smile that you desire: If your teeth are generally crooked or misaligned, Invisalign may be an excellent alternative for enhancing the overall symmetry of your smile. This is because Invisalign straightens your teeth without the need of wires or brackets.

In contrast to more conventional forms of orthodontic treatment, Invisalign straightens your teeth with the use of a system of almost invisible and easily removable aligners. This therapy is not only unobtrusive, but it also has remarkable results in terms of producing a grin that is more aligned and symmetrical. In point of fact, some individuals discover that Invisalign or other procedures utilizing transparent aligner trays are the only enhancements their smile requires in order to look its absolute best.

Recontouring: If your teeth are uneven or have a small irregular shape, this might throw off the overall symmetry of your smile. In situations like these, dental recontouring, also known as tooth reshaping, can be performed to subtly shape and smooth out the enamel in particular areas of your bite.

This procedure is also known as dental recontouring. To create an appearance that is more symmetrical and homogeneous, this non-invasive technique involves polishing away a little portion of the enamel's outermost layer. Recontouring is a simple operation that does not involve any pain and can considerably improve the overall harmony of your bite. It is not very often necessary to numb the area, and finishing the procedure just takes a few minutes.

symmetry

Bonding: Dental bonding is another adaptable cosmetic therapy that is frequently utilized by Dr. Cohan to improve the symmetry of patients' smiles. This process includes applying a tooth-colored composite resin to specific teeth in order to address flaws such as chips, gaps, or uneven edges. This is a localized procedure. Through meticulous sculpting and gluing of the material, our Summerlin cosmetic dentist is able to produce a smile that is more symmetrical and generally more visually beautiful. Bonding is a solution that is both low in cost and does not involve any intrusive procedures in order to achieve rapid results.

Request the Opinion of a Cosmetic Dentist.

How to Make Your Dental Veneers and Crowns Last Longer

August 11, 2023
Dental veneers are quickly becoming one of the most sought-after as well as very successful methods for improving the looks of one's smile. When someone with veneers grins, there is no question that everyone notices, and in the most favorable way possible! In spite of the fact that dental veneers are an excellent choice for any adult who is interested in improving the looks of their smile, it is important to observe certain behaviors if you want your investment to be protected for the longest period of time feasible. veneers
Let's go through some of the most crucial steps you can take to preserve the health of your veneers and smile so that you can enjoy smiling, chewing, and laughing for the rest of your life.   Dental Hygiene is always important. Maintaining a proper oral hygiene regimen at home is one of the most important things you can do to ensure that your dental veneers last as long as possible. This may sound like common sense to some people. You should NOT assume that because you have veneers that you are exempt from the need to brush and floss regularly. Some people believe that because veneers are not a natural component of your tooth, they do not need the same level of maintenance as real teeth, but this is not the case at all! It is essential to maintain a healthy foundation for your smile if you want your veneers to last as long as they possibly can. Gum disease and tooth decay are two of the most significant factors that contribute to the eventual failure of veneers. Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day for a full two minutes, preferably with a non-abrasive toothpaste (to reduce scratching of any type), and if you had an electric toothbrush to do the job, that would be even better! In order to thoroughly clean the areas in between your teeth and along the edges of your new veneers, flossing is an additional dental care practice that is of the utmost significance. The space in between your teeth is one of the most common places for plaque and food particles to become lodged; hence, you need to floss at least once every day to ensure that your oral health is being properly maintained. Don't forget to get your veneers properly cleaned and polished at least twice a year as part of your twice-yearly dental checkups and cleanings that should be regularly planned.   Always wear a Nightguard. Bruxism is the medical term for the habit of persons clenching or grinding their teeth during sleeping. If they do, a night guard can prevent you from suffering a significant amount of damage or additional costs. Investing in a night guard after receiving veneers can help reduce the risk of chipping or fracturing a piece of the veneer or any other teeth. This is especially important if you grind your teeth at night. When you clench and grind your teeth, you increase the risk of damaging any restorative dental work you have done, including veneers. Nightguards are simple dental appliances that may be fabricated in a matter of minutes and inserted into patients during brief office visits. Each one is shaped specifically to your grin in order to provide the highest level of comfort and functionality. When you sleep is when you are most prone to clench or grind your teeth, thus it is important to protect them during this time by wearing a night guard. Even if you don't have a history of teeth grinding, Dr. Cohan may nevertheless advise you to use this protective appliance in order to reduce the likelihood of causing your new veneers any additional harm.   Always use a Mouthguard When Playing Sports invisalign In the same vein as a night guard, it is essential to wear some sort of mouth protection whenever you participate in leisure activities. We strongly suggest that you wear a sports mouthguard whenever you participate in any activity, be it a sport or a pastime, that puts your face or mouth at danger of being injured. Some examples of this type of activity include ice skating, soccer, and cycling. Any knocks or jolts to the mouth won't immediately ruin your beautiful veneers in this way.   Start Early Treatment for Gum Disease Patients who suffer from gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, may have their aesthetic dental work or their smile in general put in jeopardy by the infection caused by their condition. Veneers are the same as any other material! If you have any type of gum disease, you always run the danger of experiencing bone loss in the future, which could, in more severe circumstances, result in the loss of teeth. Fortunately, therapy administered early on can prevent this common gum infection from spreading.   It is essential to keep in mind that the symptoms of gum disease can frequently become more severe in people who smoke and who have diabetes. When considering whether or not dental veneers are the appropriate option for you, it is essential to have this conversation with Dr. Cohan. Whether you already had some kind of gum disease before veneer treatment or developed it after your smile makeover, it is essential for your dental health to ensure that gum disease is treated and maintained appropriately. This is because gum disease can lead to serious oral health complications. Even with veneers, gum disease can be effectively managed with the help of a dental professional and by practicing proper oral hygiene.

Should I Get Dental Veneers to replace my Current Teeth?

It is important to remember that maintaining your dental veneers in order to get the most use out of them and ensure that they last as long as possible is quite similar to maintaining your natural teeth in this regard. Dental veneers have the potential to be an excellent choice for individuals who want to take their smile game to the next level if proper dental hygiene practices, routine dental care, and the assistance of an experienced dental team are adhered to. Dr. Cohan will meet with you one-on-one at Summerlin Dental Solutions in Las Vegas to discuss any dental concerns or questions you may have regarding veneers. Summerlin Dental Solutions is located in Summerlin. You can rest assured that you will receive top-notch care for all of your smile makeover requirements when you have an experienced staff working with you.

Patients who have a minor crack, an unattractive chip, or an unpleasant discoloration on one or more of their teeth may benefit from having veneers placed on any number of their teeth, from one to an entire arch.

They Are Able to Correct a Wide Range of Aesthetic Concerns in Just One Treatment veneers

In years gone by, patients who wanted to improve the appearance of their smile by straightening it, brightening it, or fixing it would get braces, undergo teeth-whitening treatments, and other procedures in order to get the results they desired. However, patients today have the option of choosing porcelain veneers, which can cure issues such as misalignment, fractured teeth, and discoloration of the teeth in a single procedure!

A Veneer's Lifespan Can Exceed Twenty Years

The application of porcelain veneers is a long-term treatment that is designed to last for twenty years or more. In addition to that, they are impervious to stains and exceptionally long-lasting. To guarantee that your teeth continue to be in excellent condition despite the fact that they are not indestructible, it is imperative that you establish and stick to a consistent oral hygiene practice and visit your dentist every six months.

They Cannot Be Undone In Any Way

Your dentist will remove some of the enamel from your teeth so that the veneers seem natural and blend in perfectly with the rest of your teeth. Even though only a very tiny amount is removed in order to prepare the tooth for the treatment, this step nonetheless renders the procedure irreversible. For this reason, it is of the utmost need that you pay close attention to the myriad of minute aspects that comprise your temporary set. After the installation of the permanent component, there is no turning back.

One Visit Is All That Is Needed to Place Veneers

You and your dentist will work together very carefully from the time of your initial consultation until the time of your follow-up appointments to ensure that the outcomes of your porcelain veneers are both beautiful and healthy. On the other hand, the procedure of actually having them put on can be finished in as little as a single visit! Talking to your cosmetic dentist in Las Vegas about how you may improve your smile is something you should do as soon as possible if you are interested in doing so. Following the initial consultation, you'll be well on your road to achieving the smile of your dreams.

How Do I Find a Good Dentist Near Me?

July 28, 2023

dentist near me
PEOPLE MIGHT NEED to find a new dentist for all sorts of reasons, so they wonder “how do I find a great dentist near me?” Maybe they just moved to Las Vegas. Maybe their old dentist retired. Maybe they’re new parents and need to find a dentist for their child. Whatever the reason is, we recommend not waiting until an urgent dental health emergency pops up before finding a dentist that fits your needs. Here are five important factors to keep in mind when searching for the best dentist for you.

1. Location, Location, Location!

How close is the Las Vegas practice to your home? To your child’s school or where they play sports? To your workplace? Make sure the distance isn’t so great that making it to twice-yearly checkups will become a major inconvenience. It’s a good idea to decide on a radius that seems doable for you and your family, then determine who the best dentist is within that radius. On the other hand, there might be a dentist slightly farther away who is still worth it for other reasons!

2. Which Dentist Near Me Has a Great Reputation?

What kind of reviews does the Las Vegas dentist have? What are their other patients saying about them? Check out the Yelp and Google reviews and maybe ask around your neighborhood, coworkers, and friend group to see if anyone you know is familiar with that particular dentist. While there can sometimes be hidden gems, a lot of good feedback is generally a positive sign.

3. What Specialties Can They Claim?

A dental practice that operates close to you and has fantastic reviews might still not be right for you if they don’t offer some of the services you think you’re likely to need. How good are they with child patients? Do they offer cosmetic treatments? How much experience do they have with root canal therapy or treating gum disease? Do some research into a dentist’s specialties to see if they’re a good fit.

4. How Well Do They Fit Your Budget?

Sometimes a dentist’s only flaw is the cost of their services in comparison to your budget, or that they aren’t in your dental insurance network. It’s still important to find a dentist for regular appointments in this case, because those checkups are much easier on a budget than a serious dental problem that could’ve been caught and treated cheaply in an early stage. Finding a budget-friendly dentist is an excellent investment, both financially and in terms of dental health.

5. Patient Comfort

If you aren’t comfortable around a dentist or within their practice, then the other factors might not matter much to you. It’s a good idea to pay a practice you’re considering an early visit just to get a sense of the place and the staff. A good dentist will always prioritize patient comfort, especially considering how many patients struggle with dental anxiety!

Meanwhile, keep up those oral hygiene habits!

We Look Forward to Meeting You!

If you weren’t sure how to answer the question “how do I find a great dentist near me” before, we hope we’ve given you a few ideas of where to begin looking in Las Vegas! If you want to learn more about our practice, just give us a call or stop by. We’re happy to answer any questions you may have!

What To Expect During Your Dental Implant Consultation

July 28, 2023

Are you considering getting dental implants for your missing teeth? This extraordinary therapy has the potential to give you a grin that is solid, long-lasting, and appears completely natural even after years have passed. It is essential that you schedule a consultation for dental implants in Summerlin at the outset of the process of replacing your missing teeth. The following is an outline of what you should anticipate happening during this very important appointment:

Assessment of the Candidates For Dental Implant

The vast majority of people are eligible for dental implants, but in order to acquire them, you must first satisfy some prerequisites and conditions. Your dental health will be evaluated by your Summerlin dentist so that he or she can establish whether or not your jawbone and gums are in good enough condition to sustain your new teeth. This evaluation might include the following:

  • A visual and oral examination will be performed. Your dentist will examine your gums to look for any signs of gum disease as well as any other disorders that could potentially affect the dental implant treatment.
  • Digital X-rays as well as other types of imaging technology. Your dental staff will be able to evaluate the size and density of your jawbone with this information.
  • A conversation about your dental hygiene practices as well as other lifestyle issues that are pertinent. People who don't smoke and are careful about brushing and flossing their teeth are the healthiest candidates for dental implants.

It is not necessary for you to panic if you are not immediately qualified to acquire dental implants. After undergoing several preliminary treatments, it is possible that you will be able to qualify for the program. A bone transplant or treatment for gum disease may be necessary, for instance, in the preceding stages of implant placement surgery for some patients.

A Discussion Regarding Your Objectives and Predictions for the Future

If you have already done any study into dental implants, you most likely have a good understanding of the various procedures and technologies that may be utilized during the procedure. Be sure to bring up the subject with your dentist if there is a particular method of treatment — for instance, you might be inquisitive about the All-on-4 procedure — in which you are interested. implants, dental implant
Being open and honest about the various financial factors is also very crucial. Dental implants are a fantastic investment, but the initial expense may be significantly higher than you anticipated.

If you let your dental team know about any worries you have regarding your finances, they will have the opportunity to assist you in exploring all of the treatment alternatives that are available to you.

The Planning of the Particulars

After gathering information about your oral health and the outcomes you hope to achieve from treatment, your dentist will be able to begin planning the particulars of your care. It's possible that they'll talk to you about the following:

  • The nature and extent of any necessary preliminary treatments • The possible number of dental implants that you will require • An estimate of how long your treatment may take from the beginning to the end • The advantages and disadvantages of the various treatment options available to you (if you are eligible for more than one type of implant procedure) • An explanation of what you can anticipate during and after your implant placement surgery

There is no reason to be concerned about the dental implant consultation you have scheduled; in all likelihood, it will make you feel enthusiastic about the path that lies ahead.

Dental Bonding or Porcelain Veneers, Which Should I Choose?

July 21, 2023
Because composite veneers and porcelain veneers are effective cosmetic dentistry treatments that can enhance your smile in a variety of ways, you might be thinking about getting one or both of them. Below we will look at the pros and cons of both options to determine which option is right for you. Dental bonding, also known as composite veneers and their porcelain equivalents, can produce dramatic results and can easily transform a smile from mediocre to fantastic in as little as one day. This is made possible by the use of porcelain and composite veneers. What Sets Porcelain Veneers Apart from Their Composite Counterparts? Let's take a look at what your dental veneer alternatives have in common before we get into the specifics of the ways in which they differ from one another. Bonding and porcelain veneers are two cosmetic procedures that can address the following issues:
  • Teeth with a severe discoloration • Teeth with some tiny cracks
  • Teeth that are chipped, worn down, or otherwise in poor condition
  • Slightly crooked or crowded teeth
Nevertheless, depending on what you want to do, one of these two choices can be preferable to the other. Porcelain Veneers These porcelain shells are so thin, but they are so sturdy, and they are custom-made to match the color of your smile. After the teeth have been molded to suit these restorations, a precise dental impression is created and submitted to the lab. Your veneers are then crafted to fit perfectly over your naturally prepared teeth, and they are cemented into place using a special adhesive. Dental Bonding Composite veneers require a different method than traditional veneers, in which the teeth still need to be prepared. However, rather than fabricating a prosthesis, composite veneers use the direct application of a composite resin to the front surface of the teeth. This material hardens and can be sculpted to look like the enamel of whole, straight teeth; once in place, it will blend in perfectly with the rest of your smile.

Comparing Composite Bonding with Porcelain Veneers -- Their Advantages and Disadvantages

Identifying the most appropriate cosmetic treatment for you will likely need taking a deeper look at a number of different criteria. porcelain veneers after
  • Aesthetics: Both porcelain veneers and bonding will do a great job of blending in with the rest of your smile thanks to their design. In comparison to composite resin, which has a more opaque appearance, porcelain has a translucent quality that gives it a somewhat more natural look.
  • Resistance to stains: Porcelain veneers are resistant to stains, whereas the substance that is used for bonding can become discolored over time if it is exposed to dark beverages or smoking.
  • Longevity: Porcelain veneers are famous for their durability and can continue to look their best for up to 25 years. Nevertheless, you are responsible for the proper maintenance of your veneers, and you should limit the use of your teeth to eating and smiling.
Depending on the material used and the level of care that is taken, dental bonding can have a lifespan anywhere from three to ten years.
  • Ease of Use: Composite veneers can frequently be done in a single visit to the dental office, but porcelain veneers normally require two visits to the dentist's office.
  • Porcelain veneers are adaptable and durable, making them an excellent option for correcting a variety of tooth defects, including discolouration, in patients seeking cosmetic dental treatment. Bonding is a fantastic and cost-effective alternative for repairing one or two small chips in teeth as well as smaller gaps between teeth. If your dentist feels that combining dental bonding, porcelain veneers, and professional teeth whitening is the most appropriate and cost-effective course of action, then you can go as far as combining all three of these procedures.
  • Price: It shouldn't come as a surprise that porcelain veneers are more expensive than dental bonding because they are so close to being irreversible.

Dental Veneer Tips When Looking for Cosmetic Dentist in Las Vegas, Nevada and Summerlin, Nevada

To assure the finest possible and most long-lasting outcomes, it is critical to find a cosmetic dentist who is not only highly trained but also has previous experience working with both approaches to smile repair. If you are considering utilizing veneers or bonding to correct structural damage but would also want a brighter smile, you should first consider getting your teeth whitened by a specialist. This will allow your restoration(s) to be color-matched to your brighter smile after it has been achieved. If you suffer from bruxism, often known as teeth grinding, you should seek treatment for this condition before getting veneers or bonding done, since you run the risk of damaging your newly restored teeth. It is extremely discouraged to use one's teeth in order to open bottles or other containers because doing so will inevitably result in broken veneers and natural teeth. Dental Veneers of Superb Quality in Las Vegas, Nevada Dr. Marianne Cohan encourages you to make an appointment so that you may learn how she can assist you in enhancing or entirely changing the appearance of your smile using porcelain veneers or bonding. Please contact our office as soon as possible at (702) 341-9160.

5 Steps to a Smile Makeover

July 14, 2023

A smile makeover is a customized combination of cosmetic dentistry treatments meant to transform your teeth into the grin of a movie star that you have always wanted, even if they are damaged, discolored, or misaligned. Altering the appearance of your grin to make it more charming can be accomplished in as little as one day or as much as an entire year. Before and throughout the process, you will need to carry out the steps outlined below (in the sequence specified).

Could I Benefit from Getting My Smile Redesigned?

Making sure that your teeth are in good health is the first preliminary step in the process of giving yourself a new smile. Before making any cosmetic adjustments, it is imperative to take care of any cavities, evidence of gum disease, or teeth that have become loose. However, the beauty and health of your smile are intertwined when it comes to issues such as misalignment, missing or loose teeth, and tooth loss.

What Should I Anticipate During My Consultation for a Smile Makeover?

It's possible that you already have an idea of which treatments to go with. However, in order to identify which treatment (or treatments) will be most effective in meeting your requirements, you will need to have a consultation with a qualified cosmetic dental professional. The next phase in the preliminary process is this one. pain-free Following a discussion of your concerns and objectives, the cosmetic dentist will perform an examination of your teeth and gums to confirm or make a discovery regarding any of the following issues:

  • Teeth that are chipped, broken, gapped, discolored, small, worn down, twisted, misaligned, or chipped; loose teeth or teeth that are missing; teeth that are chipped, broken, gapped, discolored, or chipped; missing teeth or loose teeth.

After that, they will devise a treatment strategy for you, which will incorporate the cosmetic dental operations that will give you the most desirable outcomes. A Successful Smile Makeover Can Be Achieved by Following These 5 Simple Steps In order to complete your smile makeover, the following cosmetic dental treatments, chosen by you, might be performed in the following order:

  1. Invisalign® Clear Dental Aligners

Invisalign® would be the initial step in the process if your teeth are crooked or if your bite is not properly aligned. This treatment often lasts anywhere from three months to one year, and in rare circumstances it can even go on for longer than that. If you intend to whiten your teeth as part of your smile makeover, you may be able to use a teeth whitener of professional strength in conjunction with the aligners during the final two weeks of treatment. This is because the aligners are designed to fit snugly over your teeth.

  1. Teeth Bleaching Performed by Professionals

The following stage, professional teeth whitening, is recommended if your teeth have surface stains known as extrinsic stains. The ZOOM! teeth whitening system is an easy-to-use procedure that only takes approximately an hour to complete and can whiten your teeth by up to eight shades. If your treatment plan includes any form of restoration, such as crowns, implants, veneers, or bonding, a skilled cosmetic dentist will strongly recommend that you have your teeth whitened beforehand in order to prepare for the restoration. A uniformly brighter smile can be achieved in this manner by selecting a lighter colour for the dental prosthesis that are placed in the mouth.

  1. Dental Implants

Dental implants can be placed in your jaw if your jawbone, gums, and the teeth that are still in your mouth are all in good health despite the fact that you are missing one or more teeth. Because the implant needs time to fuse with the jawbone, completing this stage can take anywhere from a couple of months to a few months, depending on the techniques that are employed. After the implant has been successfully fixed in the jaw, your dentist will be able to insert a permanent crown that is a perfect match for your natural teeth or for teeth that have been whitened.

  1. Veneers and Crowns Made of Porcelain

Teeth that have obvious structural deterioration may require either porcelain veneers or crowns for restoration. Veneers are ultra-thin shells made of porcelain that can correct a variety of cosmetic flaws, such as teeth that are chipped, worn down, moderately misaligned, or have deep (intrinsic) stains that cannot be cured with professional teeth whitening. Veneers can also be used to improve the appearance of teeth that have been slightly misshaped. When one or more teeth are severely damaged (broken, cracked, or too small for veneers), a crown may be the best option.

  1. Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a more cost-effective alternative to veneers, and it can also be used to cover teeth that have been badly chipped or severely stained. Your smile can be repaired and made more attractive with dental bonding; but, it does not last as long as porcelain veneers.

Which Cosmetic Dental Procedures are Often Combined?

July 7, 2023

Why and when do you need to combine cosmetic dental procedures?

If you are prepared to address various aesthetic dental problems and you want to attain your goals as quickly as possible, combining operations is a wonderful concept for you to consider. Nevertheless, certain therapies can be carried out concurrently with greater ease than others can. The following examples represent the most typical circumstances; the appropriate actions should be carried out in the sequence presented. When the Alignment of the Teeth Is Necessary Straightening teeth with Invisalign® is a fantastic option for orthodontic treatment. This method can be integrated with a number of different processes, although doing so takes quite a bit of time. invisalign The process of straightening teeth typically comes first in the order of dental procedures because of the length of time it requires. However, extra aesthetic dental care may be performed while the patient is wearing their Invisalign® transparent aligners. These procedures may include the following:
  • Dental implants: In some cases, the process of preparing the gums and jawbone to receive dental implants can begin while the patient is undergoing treatment with Invisalign®. In this method, by the time your teeth are completed being straightened, the gum and bone that lies beneath them may have improved to the point where they are healthy enough to accommodate the implant.
  • Teeth whitening — During the final two weeks of treatment, you can use the Invisalign® aligner trays in conjunction with a professional strength teeth whitener that you apply at home. This will result in teeth that are straight as well as white and sparkling.
  • When your treatment with Invisalign® is complete, you have the option of incorporating additional aesthetic dental procedures, including as veneers or bonding, to address issues such as chipped teeth, deeply stained teeth, or worn down teeth. Porcelain veneers are an option for patients who have slightly mild cases of slightly crooked, gapped, or misaligned teeth.
  • When a Single Tooth or several Teeth Need to Be Replaced Dental implants can support bridges and dentures in order to replace several teeth, or they can replace a single tooth on their own. As was noted before, if you still have the majority of your natural teeth and would like to have them straightened first, you might be able to do so if their health and the condition of your gums are good enough.
Aside from that, the following aesthetic procedures can be carried out either before or after the implant(s) are inserted:
  • Teeth whitening — Brighten the color of your natural teeth before going to get the color of your implant crown matched. After having your implant installed, you will be able to enjoy a grin that is naturally brighter thanks to this method. It is essential to keep in mind that restorations such as crowns and veneers cannot have their color lightened at a later time.
  • Crowns, veneers, and bonding - After having your teeth whitened and getting implants, you can treat other issues such as severe discoloration that does not respond to whitening or structural damage to your natural teeth with crowns, veneers, and bonding. Crowns made of porcelain, veneers, or dental bonding are all viable options for achieving this result.
If your teeth are only slightly crooked or if you have only a few crooked teeth, veneers may be a better option for you than orthodontic therapy. Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are bonded to the front surface of teeth. Why the Sequence of Your Cosmetic Dental Procedures Is Important If you get your dental work done in the correct order, each procedure will work more effectively, which will result in the greatest possible outcomes. To briefly recap, it is imperative that dental caries, gum disease, and infections be treated first before undergoing any cosmetic dental procedures.cosmetic dentistry The following steps should be taken in the following order for your cosmetic dental care once the health of your smile has been addressed:
  1. Orthodontics - Straightening crooked or mismatched teeth is the initial step in this process.
  2. Tooth whitening: If you are thinking about getting your teeth whitened, you should do so before getting a restoration.
  3. Tooth replacement: Before deciding between an implant and a fixed bridge to replace a missing tooth, you should address any difficulties with the appearance of your natural teeth, such as crookedness or discoloration, first.
  4. Teeth that have been damaged It is important to treat the appearance of teeth that are damaged. This includes teeth that are tiny, malformed, chipped, fractured, cracked, or somewhat misaligned.

General Dentist and Cosmetic Dentist: What's the DIfference?

June 30, 2023

What sets a cosmetic dentist apart from a general dentist and how do they differ in practice?

The terms "general dentist" and "cosmetic dentist" are bandied around rather frequently in everyday conversation. You might not be aware that there is a fairly substantial distinction between them due to the fact that they are both referred to as "dentists," even though many dentists perform both services. So, what's the difference between a cosmetic dentist and a general dentist? General dentists perform the essential procedures that are necessary to maintain healthy teeth and gums, whereas cosmetic dentists focus on the appearance of patients' smiles.

What to Look for in a Dentist Who Specializes in Cosmetic Procedures

Choose a cosmetic dentist who concentrates on the attractiveness of your smile if your teeth and gums are in good health but you are still self-conscious about how your smile looks. In this way, you can rest assured that they have a significant amount of experience performing cosmetic dental procedures.dentist The following are some of the services that a qualified cosmetic dentist will provide in order to give you the smile you have always dreamed of having:

  • Having your teeth whitened by a dental professional — In only one appointment at the dentist, you may have your teeth whitened professionally using a product such as ZOOM!, which will leave them looking brilliant and stunning. During this procedure, each tooth will first be painted with the Zoom! whitening solution, and then it will be subjected to a specific light that will activate the treatment. This procedure, which may be performed as many as four times to achieve the desired results, is typically the initial step in a comprehensive smile makeover (unless orthodontic therapy is required). Because the color of porcelain or ceramic restorations cannot be lightened once they have been put, it is recommended that patients have their teeth whitened prior to having crowns or veneers.
  • Dental veneers are a versatile cosmetic treatment that can be used to cover teeth with intrinsic stains that are resistant to whitening treatments as well as teeth that are chipped, deformed, worn down, or misaligned. Dental veneers can also be used to close gaps between teeth that are caused by misalignment. They can also be used in conjunction with teeth whitening to produce a smile that is whiter and more consistent.
  • Aesthetic dental bonding - This treatment can be used to remedy concerns that are comparable to those that are addressed with dental veneers in order to get the same results at a lesser cost. On the other hand, it's possible that this alternative won't endure as long as veneers.
  • Porcelain crowns are a type of dental restoration that can be used to restore a tooth that has sustained damage that is more severe than what can be fixed by a dental veneer. A dental crown will replace the whole section of a tooth that is visible in contrast to dental veneers, which only repair the front surfaces of teeth.
  • Replacing missing teeth with dental implants, the most thorough approach to tooth replacement Dental implants are the most comprehensive approach to tooth replacement. Dental implants provide a solution to tooth loss that is both stable and long-lasting, in contrast to fixed bridges, which merely repair the section of the lost tooth that is visible in the mouth.
  • Aligning your teeth discretely using Invisalign® — Dental aligners from Invisalign® are an excellent alternative to traditional metal braces for straightening teeth that are crooked, crowded, or otherwise improperly aligned. After completing your Invisalign® treatment, you will be able to utilize the aligners with a teeth whitener that is designed for professional usage to get a smile that is both straighter and whiter.

Considerations to Make When Choosing a Family Dentist To reduce the amount of times patients have to be sent to other specialists, a comprehensive general dental practitioner ought to offer a variety of dental specialties. You should read the evaluations on their website to get an idea of their levels of expertise, levels of competence, and backgrounds before hiring them. A comprehensive dental office will employ at least two dentists, each of whom will focus their practice on one of the following areas of dentistry:

  • Preventative care – The fundamentals of general dentistry involve performing an examination of the patient's teeth and gums in addition to analyzing x-rays in order to establish the most effective method to treat existing tooth decay. This method may include the placement of fillings, inlays, onlays, or crowns. Sealants and fluoride treatments are examples of preventative interventions that should be made available.
  • Periodontal care - Also known as gum health maintenance and periodontal disease treatment, periodontal care is provided by a periodontist. Inflammation, abscesses, the loss of teeth, and deterioration of the jaw bone can all be caused by gum disease. In addition to this, it has been related to a number of systemic health issues.
  • Endodontics refers to the practice of treating the interior of teeth, also known as "the pulp," which is made up of connective tissue, nerves, and blood vessels. An endodontist can perform this procedure. Root canal therapy is a frequent procedure that dentists like these use to treat diseased teeth.
  • An oral surgeon is a specialist who is able to execute difficult extractions such as the removal of wisdom teeth. Oral surgeons are the most common medical professionals responsible for placing dental implants, while other specialists are capable of performing this treatment.
  • Orthodontics — If you have crooked teeth, having an orthodontist on-site can help you achieve the smile you've always wanted.

Am I Too Old to Have My Wisdom Teeth Extracted?

June 23, 2023
wisdom

Have you been debating whether or not it would be beneficial to have your wisdom teeth removed? Have you been advised that it is now the appropriate time to have them extracted? It's possible that you're nervous about the procedure itself, or that you feel like you might be a little bit too old to have your wisdom teeth pulled at this point in your life.

Well, I want to shed some light on whether or not you are too old to have your wisdom teeth extracted, as well as things you need to know before you decide to move forward with the procedure. First, I want to address the question of whether or not you are too old to have your wisdom teeth extracted.

Your first piece of information should be that there is no real age that is set in stone when you should have your wisdom teeth extracted. This is the most important thing that you should know. Although it is recommended that you have your wisdom teeth extracted between the ages of 18 and 24, this does not always happen for some people. Even though it is recommended, it does not always happen. People may put off having their wisdom teeth extracted until they are older for a variety of reasons. This is assuming that they even get their wisdom teeth extracted at all.

Therefore, even if you did not get your wisdom teeth extracted when you were younger, there is no reason why you cannot get them extracted now if they are bothering you or causing an issue that your healthcare professional believes is sufficient for you to have them extracted as this point. There is no reason why you cannot get them extracted now if they are bothering you or causing an issue.

wisdom teeth

In the event that you make the decision to proceed with having your wisdom teeth removed, there are a few considerations that you will want to keep in mind as you move forward with the process:

Injury to the Nerves: The longer your wisdom teeth remain in your mouth, the closer they get to your nerves. As a result, there is a possibility that you could sustain some nerve damage while undergoing your procedure because of the proximity of your wisdom teeth to your nerves. This could result in additional complications and lengthen the time it takes for you to recover, as well. Before you go ahead with the procedure, you should definitely discuss these potential side effects with your primary care physician.

A Lengthier Time Spent in Recovery: As we get older, our bodies take longer to recover from injuries and procedures than they did in the past. This indicates that the manner in which your body healed from this procedure when you were younger may not necessarily be the manner in which it will heal now that you are an older adult. When you are planning the timing of your procedure, you will need to take this into consideration. It is going to be very important for you to make sure that you give yourself enough time to recover, and it is important that you do not rush into scheduling things that need to be done during this time because it is possible that you will not recover as quickly as you think you will. Even though the recovery time for this procedure is typically only one to two weeks, in the event that there are complications, your downtime may be slightly extended.

Additional Tips for Wisdom Teeth:

teeth

Have a discussion with your dentist about the possibility of applying ice to the areas where the extractions have been completed. This will aid in reducing the swelling by a significant amount!

Please adhere to the post-operative instructions!! This is of the utmost importance because you want to ensure that you reduce the risk of infection as well as other post-operative complications such as dry socket!

If you have been having pain in your jaw or if you have been given the advice that you should have your wisdom teeth extracted, it is something that you should think about doing as soon as possible and give serious consideration to doing so. Even though there is a remote possibility that complications will arise during your procedure, the benefits of having your wisdom teeth extracted almost always outweigh the risks. This is because leaving your wisdom teeth in place can lead to more serious complications.

The Link Between Heart Disease and Gum Disease

June 16, 2023

The Relationship Between Periodontal Disease and Cardiovascular Disease

For a significant amount of time, the majority of us were under the impression that coronary heart disease was primarily a "men's health" concern. This misconception persisted for a significant amount of time. And despite the fact that this is not at all the case, this misconception is understandable given the fact that throughout the majority of the 20th century, more men than women passed away from heart disease.

However, since the middle of the 1980s, there has been a steady increase in the number of deaths among women caused by heart disease. Since the year 2017, cardiovascular disease has continued to be the leading cause of death among both men and women. This is the case regardless of gender. In addition, research that was carried out by the American Heart Association indicates that heart disease is the cause of death for one out of every three women in the United States each and every year.

Maintaining a healthy diet and being physically active on a regular basis are two of the most important steps you can take to ensure your heart stays in good health. On the other hand, were you aware that maintaining regular dental appointments is beneficial to the health of your heart? We have joined forces with the American Heart Association in order to raise awareness about the correlation between having healthy teeth and gums and having a healthy heart and circulatory system as a whole as part of their celebration of Go Red for Women day.

What aspects of gum disease are similar to heart disease, and what aspects distinguish them from one another?

Our bodies are complex systems. It is not an exception to the rule that problems in one area of the body can frequently cause problems in other areas of the body, and the mouth is not an exception to this rule. Poor oral health has been linked to a wide variety of health problems, including diabetes and dementia, according to recent research. Researchers have recently come to the conclusion that periodontal disease may have a causal relationship with a variety of heart conditions. According to the findings of various pieces of research, having poor oral health may be associated with a very wide variety of conditions.

gum

According to a warning that was issued by the American Academy of Periodontology more than 20 years ago, which is when the connection between the two was first discovered, inflammation and infection of the gums can lead to conditions such as heart attack and stroke. The warning was issued because it was discovered that inflammation and infection of the gums can lead to these conditions. Since that time, a significant number of investigations have been carried out to provide evidence for the veracity of the connection between the two.

According to the findings of a review that combined the findings of several different studies, having a history of periodontitis, which is another name for severe gum disease, can increase a person's risk of developing heart disease by as much as twenty percent. "the risk for myocardial infarction was significantly increased among subjects with periodontitis with an odds ratio of 1:49," found the findings of a different study that was published in the year 2016. (That is an absolutely ridiculously high percentage.)

Although researchers in all of the studies have noted that periodontitis is not an absolute cause of heart disease (due to the fact that there are many other factors at play, such as a poor diet and the use of tobacco), it is difficult to ignore the correlation between the two conditions.

To what extent does periodontal disease contribute to the development of heart disease?

Plaque is the primary causative factor in gum disease, which appears clinically as an infection of the gums and is caused by the persistent formation of plaque on the teeth. Plaque is a substance that forms around the teeth and under the gums over the course of the day. Plaque is made up of bacteria and a substance that is sticky, and it is composed of both of these components.

disease

By maintaining proper oral hygiene practices on a consistent basis, such as brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist on a regular basis, plaque can be removed from teeth and prevented from hardening into tartar. This can be accomplished. Plaque and tartar are both ideal environments for the growth of the pathogenic bacteria that are responsible for gum disease. Both of these environments serve as breeding grounds for the bacteria.

When gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease, advances into periodontitis, it pulls the gums away from the teeth and can lead to visibly receding gums and even permanent tooth loss. Gingivitis is an early stage of gum disease. Periodontitis is a more advanced stage of gum disease. The first sign of gum disease is gingivitis, which is a mild form. The most advanced form of gum disease is known as periodontitis. As a consequence of this, the mouth becomes more receptive to the entry of additional bacteria, which then travels to other parts of the body and causes inflammation as well as damage to the blood vessels in those areas.

The bacteria that live in your mouth when you have gum disease can cross over into your bloodstream, enter your heart, and directly infect the vulnerable heart valves, according to Dr. Marietta Ambrose, an assistant professor of clinical medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Marietta Ambrose has been quoted as having said these words. "The microbes that are found in the mouths of people who suffer from gum disease."

According to Penn Medicine, this has been shown to be the case in numerous studies. "Oral bacteria have been found by researchers in the fatty deposits of people who have atherosclerosis, a condition in which plaque builds up in the arteries (of the heart). Atherosclerosis is a condition in which plaque builds up in the arteries (of the heart). These deposits, if left untreated, can cause the arteries to become narrower or become dislodged and clogged, both of which can lead to a heart attack or stroke."

How to protect yourself from developing heart disease in addition to gum disease

These facts might be cause for concern, particularly when viewed in light of the fact that it is estimated that roughly half of all adults in the United States suffer from some form of gum disease. On the other hand, just like with so many other aspects of our health, we can all take preventative measures to lower the risk that we will develop the condition.

It goes without saying that brushing your teeth twice a day helps reduce the accumulation of plaque and tartar, both of which attract bacteria that is harmful to your teeth and gums. Brushing your teeth twice a day also helps remove food particles stuck in between your teeth, which can cause cavities. Brush your teeth carefully and in a circular motion using a toothbrush with medium or soft bristles. This type of bristle is less likely to cause damage to the gums than harder bristles. It is important to remember to brush not only your teeth but also the inside of your cheeks and your tongue when you brush your teeth.

You should floss the area that is located between your teeth and gums at least once per day, if not more frequently. (If you want more information, you can read a blog post that we wrote about the differences between traditional floss and a water flosser.) "Regular floss" is the term used to refer to the string that is used to clean between teeth.

•It is recommended that you visit your dentist at least twice a year for checkups and cleanings. These visits should be spaced out evenly throughout the year. In order to keep your health in good standing, it is essential to deal with issues as soon as they arise. For this reason, be sure to mention any problems that you have observed, such as gums that are swollen or bleeding or teeth that are unusually sensitive. Your dentist will be able to determine the cause of the problem and recommend the appropriate treatment. They are able to instruct you on the correct way to brush your teeth and use floss, and they may even suggest specialized products, such as a mouthwash that contains folic acid. In addition, they are able to answer any questions that you may have regarding your oral health.

It is essential to keep in mind, however, that not everyone will have a direct connection between gum disease and heart disease. Not everyone will have a direct connection between gum disease and heart disease. This is something that has been discussed in the past by both of us. There are many people who have one without developing the other, and shared risk factors can make it difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of either condition. In other words, there are many people who only have one of these conditions.

In spite of this, there are a few steps you can take to lower your chances of developing gum disease as well as heart disease, and they are as follows:

  • Immediately give up smoking as well as any and all other forms of using tobacco. (Or, even better, don't even get started in the first place!)
  • Make sure that the majority of your daily intake consists of vegetables, fruits with a low sugar content, and lean proteins. Not only does eating a healthy diet reduce the amount of sugars, starches, and acids that can damage teeth, but it also reduces the risk of developing high cholesterol, which can lead to heart conditions.
  • Maintain your active lifestyle! The promotion and upkeep of our overall health can be greatly aided by engaging in regular physical activity, which is one of the best things we can do for ourselves.
  • Throughout the course of the day, keep an eye out for opportunities to reduce the amount of stress you're feeling. Both prolonged exposure to high levels of stress and hypertension have been shown to have deleterious effects on virtually every part of the body, including the heart and the mouth.

White Spots: What They Are and How To Get Rid Of Them

June 9, 2023

White Spots: An Explanation of What They Are and Some Suggestions for Their Elimination

A typical form of enamel discolouration that can be seen on teeth is white spots. Certain regions of the tooth give the impression of being a brilliant, opaque white color, which makes them stand out from the rest of the tooth. Even while your first thought could be that having white teeth is attractive, you should know that this is not the case here. Teeth can look discolored and even damaged if they have white spots on them.

White Spots

What are the Roots of White Spots?

There are a few possible explanations for why a person might have white spots on their teeth. In point of fact, it's something that comes up rather frequently in our experience.

Some of the following are potential reasons of spots on teeth:

Genetics or developmental irregularities.

A symptom of a nutritional deficit or an imbalance in mineral levels.

Some children suffer from a condition known as fluorosis, which occurs when either the child's bones take in an excessive amount of fluoride or the child consumes an excessive quantity of fluoride when they are young.

One of the consequences of having celiac disease. People who are gluten intolerant may not be able to properly absorb all of the required nutrients contained in the meals that they consume because they cannot consume gluten.

White spots on teeth, in addition to other types of tooth discolouration, have been linked to the use of certain drugs.

Enamel hypoplasia, a disorder that generates white patches on teeth, is one of the dental concerns that can be caused by smoking while pregnant. Other dental problems might also be caused.

When a person consumes a large quantity of sugary foods, the tooth enamel begins to deteriorate, which leads to decalcification (a state in which the teeth get weaker) and the development of white spots on the teeth.

Plaque buildup around brackets, wires, and other orthodontic appliances is one of the most common causes of white spots, and one of the most common causes of white spots is wearing braces.

Optional Treatment for White Spots According to the Standard

In the past, there were only two different treatment options available for white spots. The initial step was to apply fluoride products to the teeth in order to remineralize them. This approach frequently failed since it did not provide significant results, if any outcomes at all.

The second potential therapy for white spots is to approach the region as though it were a cavity. That is, thoroughly cleaning the region and then filling it with a composite material that matches the tooth's color. However, over time these fillings deteriorate, and eventually they will need to be replaced.

One other alternative for treating white spots is the use of veneers, which has been done in the past. However, due to its high cost, this remedy is not suggested for people under the age of 40. Despite this, children and teenagers are the demographic most likely to get white spots on their teeth.

If the white spots on your teeth are small enough, our dentist in Summerlin may decide not to treat them but instead to monitor them closely in the event that they develop into cavities at a later time.

Optional new treatment for teeth whitening to address white spots

white spots

For the elimination of dental white spots in Summerlin, outmoded methods are not the sole solutions available any longer. We are now able to eliminate white spots without the need for any numbing, drilling, or filling thanks to a breakthrough new therapy. We could take a more cautious approach instead of using solutions that don't work or that need dental treatments that are irreversible. This would allow us to get rid of white spots while still protecting good tooth structure.

During this innovative technique, the white spot, also known as a lesion, is etched away using a unique gel that opens the pores that are distributed evenly across the surface of your tooth. After the white spot has been dried, a specialized drug is administered to the lesion on the skin. This causes the formula to permeate the pores of the tooth, which halts the progression of the white spots. After having any surplus material removed, the tooth is next healed by being placed under a specific light.

The time required for treatment is short, taking approximately 15 minutes for each tooth. The finished product is a tooth surface that is pleasing to the eye and even in appearance.

Avoiding the Appearance of White Spots

Prevention is always going to be the most effective type of dental treatment. Every day, you should practice proper dental hygiene in addition to leading a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of developing white spots on your teeth. At least twice a day, give your teeth a good brushing and flossing. If you are wearing braces, you should wash your teeth after each meal. Be sure to give the area around the brackets and wires a careful and thorough cleaning. You should also try to limit your consumption of sugary foods and beverages, such as those found in sodas and energy drinks. Water is by far the most desirable beverage option.

If you are pregnant, you should avoid smoking since it increases the likelihood that your child may have oral problems in the future.

Monitor your child as he or she cleans their teeth. Don't let them use too much toothpaste or you'll have a problem on your hands. Only a very small amount of toothpaste, about the size of a grain of rice, should be used for infants and toddlers. A quantity equivalent to a pea is the perfect size for older children.

The Untold Danger of Tooth Decay

June 2, 2023
decay

The majority of people will, at some point in their lives, experience tooth decay, which can affect them to a lesser or greater degree depending on the severity of the condition. This is because tooth decay is one of the most common diseases in the world.

If you have pain in a tooth, it's possible that you have a cavity; if this is the case, you should schedule an appointment with a dentist as soon as you can. If the pain persists, you should see a dentist as soon as possible.

What are the Causative Factors Contributing to Tooth Decay?

Plaque is produced when food debris and bacteria accumulate in the mouth and attach themselves to the enamel of the teeth. This process takes place over time. The loss of tooth structure ultimately results from this process. When plaque is not removed, it can eventually turn into an acid that will erode the tooth if the situation is not remedied. Cavities can develop in people who have a genetic predisposition to them, but anyone can get cavities if they don't take care of their teeth. Cavities can also develop in people who have a genetic predisposition to them.

What are the most significant dangers to your health that are brought on by tooth decay?

Decay and cavities in the teeth may appear to be unimportant issues with little sense of urgency; however, if you ignore them for an extended period of time, they can have significant repercussions for your health and could even lead to the need for extractions. The following is a list of some of the more serious risks that are associated with dental decay that has not been treated:

  • You run the risk of experiencing bone loss if the decay in your teeth extends below the gum line or if the cavities in your molars are particularly deep.
  • If tooth decay is not treated in a timely manner, it can hasten the process of gum recession, which in turn can make it more difficult for you to have orthodontic implants or any other treatment for your teeth in the future.
  • Normal bone loss that occurs with aging makes the situation even more difficult. It is possible that this will result in an increased risk of periodontal disease that is severe.

A study that was conducted at the Harvard Medical School discovered a link between untreated cavities in teeth and an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

  • The discomfort brought on by tooth decay can reduce quality of life, and if the pain is severe, it can make you miserable and raise the possibility that you'll have trouble sleeping and eating well.
  • The pain that results from tooth decay can have a negative effect on the quality of life. Tooth decay can lead to serious complications, such as an infection that spreads to the bloodstream or septic shock, which can, in extremely rare cases, result in the patient's death. These complications can be avoided by treating the tooth decay as soon as possible.
How exactly can one prevent tooth decay from occurring in their own teeth?

Despite the fact that practicing good oral hygiene, such as brushing and flossing regularly, can significantly cut the risk of developing cavities, this does not always guarantee that cavities will be prevented entirely.

It is essential for your health that you receive the comprehensive examination that is performed in conjunction with the twice-yearly cleaning and scaling and x-rays that are taken to detect any hidden decay. This examination is performed in conjunction with the cleaning and scaling that takes place every six months. After that, cavities can be filled, or the tooth can be extracted if the decay is too severe to be treated with fillings. Both of these choices are open to consideration.

Dental decay need not be a significant threat to one's health if it is discovered in its early stages and treated with fillings as soon as possible.

You Should Avoid Letting the Decay on Your Teeth Get Any Worse! Now is the time to schedule your appointment with Dr. Cohan, so get on it!

Toothpaste for sensitive teeth: Where to start

May 26, 2023
sensitive

Do you have sensitive teeth? Tooth sensitivity is something that will affect the majority of us at some point in our lives, and it's likely that it already has. Even though it's unpleasant, there are some things in life that you just can't avoid doing. And while it might only be a mild annoyance for some people for a brief amount of time, others are forced to put up with it on a more consistent basis.

Make an appointment at Summerlin Dental SOlutions with Dr. Cohan if you have a history of tooth sensitivity that persists for an extended period of time. This will allow the dentist to determine the cause of the discomfort that you are feeling in your teeth. In the meantime, you might want to give a toothpaste specially formulated for individuals with tooth sensitivity a try.

There are many different conditions that can result in sensitive teeth, such as inflamed gums, weakened tooth enamel, cavities, receding gums, and so on. One of the most common causes of sensitive teeth is cavities. However, regardless of the cause, using toothpaste designed for teeth that are sensitive can help manage the pain in the interim while the root cause of the issue with your teeth is being addressed. Because using the incorrect kind of toothpaste can actually make teeth that are sensitive to pain even more sensitive, it is essential to select a toothpaste that is appropriate for the problem you are experiencing.

Because it closes off open tubules that lead to nerves that are more exposed, sensitivity toothpaste makes the nerve endings less sensitive. This happens because it seals off the nerves that are more exposed. It has been demonstrated that fluoride toothpaste is effective in preventing tooth decay and strengthening enamel; consequently, many of these pastes include fluoride as an additional ingredient in their formulations.

Find a toothpaste that is designed specifically for sensitive teeth and use that.

When searching for a toothpaste to treat sensitive teeth, you should first assess how severe your symptoms are and think about whether you require a toothpaste that focuses solely on providing relief from sensitivity. If you do require such a toothpaste, then you should look for one that is designed specifically for that purpose. If you want a sensitivity toothpaste that is truly effective, you might have to sacrifice some of the other benefits, such as the ability to whiten your teeth or your favorite flavor of toothpaste. If you prefer to use natural toothpaste, it may be difficult for you to find a product that offers complete protection against sensitivity because natural toothpaste brands do not typically contain the active ingredients that provide instant relief.

Bear in mind, however, that not all toothpastes designed specifically for teeth that are sensitive offer the same benefits. Some of them will be effective in treating sensitivity, but others of them will not be as effective in preventing tartar buildup or gum disease in the teeth. Some are more comprehensive than others, offering pain relief, cavity protection, and additional breath freshening in a single, convenient package. Others only offer one or two of these benefits. There are even toothpastes that can whiten your teeth while also preventing sensitivity in your tooth enamel.

When looking for the best toothpaste for sensitive teeth, there are a few considerations you should make, including the following:

teeth

Brand: There is a very large selection available for you to choose from! And despite the fact that selecting the alternative that provides the most affordable cost may seem appealing at times, this is not necessarily the most prudent course of action in every circumstance. Choose a product that is endorsed wholeheartedly by the dental community. If you already use toothpaste that you like, you might want to think about switching to a sensitive formulation made by the same brand. This would be ideal for people who have sensitive teeth. When in doubt, Colgate and Sensodyne are two trustworthy brands that are able to provide relief for skin that is sensitive. Sensodyne Extra Whitening and Sensodyne Repair offer a number of additional benefits in addition to relieving sensitivity. These benefits include cavity protection and a more gentle form of whitening than traditional whitening methods. In addition to that, the flavor isn't half bad.

The American Dental Association (ADA) has established that despite the fact that numerous brands of toothpaste claim to have a variety of benefits, this is not necessarily the case in all instances. The American Dental Association (ADA) will give their seal of approval to a product when they are satisfied that it is genuine and that it lives up to the claims that have been made about it. This demonstrates that the product is effective in combating tooth sensitivity, cavities, plaque, and other dental health problems. It is imperative that the toothpaste you choose have this certification in order to guarantee that it will be able to effectively treat your sensitivity. If it does not have this certification, you cannot be sure that it will treat your sensitivity effectively.

It's possible that you think toothpaste specially formulated for sensitive teeth will cost more than regular toothpaste, but that's not always the case. It is not hard to locate a high-quality product in the same price range that you would pay for any other brand of toothpaste. Finding such a product is not difficult. Also, keep in mind that the effort you put into maintaining good oral health will reward you handsomely in the long run. It is true that prevention is always preferable to treatment, and making an investment in products that promote excellent oral health can be done at home and will pay off in the long run. This is an example of a situation in which prevention is always preferable to treatment.

Ingredients: The efficiency of the toothpaste can be traced back to the individual components that go into making up the product. In this particular scenario, the two constituents that stand out the most are the potassium nitrate and the stannous fluoride. Potassium nitrate acts as the agent that soothes the nerves, and stannous fluoride (which is not a character from Game of Thrones) collaborates with the enamel of your teeth to form a repairing layer on the vulnerable parts of each tooth.

As a result, these vulnerable parts of each tooth are shielded from the searing pain that is brought on by sensitivity. Potassium nitrate is the component responsible for the effects. Avoid using toothpaste that does not contain fluoride because it will not provide the same benefits as fluoride-containing toothpaste. Home treatments for teeth that are sensitive include avoiding sugary foods and drinks.

According to the results of a study that was conducted in 2013, it was discovered that one in every eight people who visit the dentist do so because of sensitive teeth. However, in addition to these, there are also some helpful home remedies that you can try at home to combat the pain that comes from those sensitive teeth. There is no doubt that proper dental procedures are available to treat dental sensitivity, and dental insurance can help manage the cost of these procedures. These are the following:

Oil pulling

sens2

It is common knowledge that the technique of "oil pulling," which can be carried out with either coconut oil or sesame oil, can reduce the sensitivity of one's teeth. The technique of oil pulling, which has its origins in Ayurvedic medicine and has been practiced in India for centuries, entails swishing one tablespoon of oil around in your mouth for two to twenty minutes at a time before spitting it out. This process is repeated multiple times throughout the course of the day. According to the findings of one study, performing daily "oil pulling" with coconut oil can help reduce the formation of plaque and deal with the early symptoms of gingivitis.

Additionally, this practice can help deal with the discomfort associated with gingivitis. This, in turn, contributes to a reduction in tooth sensitivity. Research has shown that gingivitis, which is one of the most common causes of tooth sensitivity, can lead to gum recession, which is one of the most common causes of gum recession. Gingivitis is one of the most common causes of both tooth sensitivity and gum recession.

Garlic

For a very long time, people who suffer from excruciating toothaches have turned to garlic as a treatment. When you chew on a raw piece of garlic, the compound allicin, which has antimicrobial properties and kills the bacteria that cause oral diseases and tooth sensitivity, is released. These bacteria are the ones that cause oral diseases and tooth sensitivity. This aids in the fight against tooth sensitivity. It is possible to make a paste by combining three separate garlic cloves, a half teaspoon of salt, and a very small amount of warm water.

After applying the paste to the area of your skin that is particularly sensitive, you should wait a few minutes for it to take effect before removing it with warm water that has been diluted with salt. (And when you are finished, you really ought to go ahead and brush your teeth in the correct manner.)

Guava leaves

The guava fruit is good for your health on its own, but the leaves of the guava tree also have medicinal value and should not be thrown away. They include rutin, kaempferol, and quercetin, which are all anti-inflammatory compounds that can assist in reducing tooth sensitivity. This can be demonstrated by chewing on guava leaves for approximately three minutes, after which time the leaves should be spit out. A mouthwash can also be made by bringing about six guava leaves and one cup of water to a boil in a pot. After allowing it to steep for fifteen minutes, put it to the side so that it can cool down. After you've brushed your teeth, try swishing a pinch of salt around in your mouth for a few minutes.

Clove oil

Cloves have an analgesic effect on the human body! Additionally, it is well known that the condition of one's teeth can be improved by using clove oil. It is effective against a wide variety of oral infections due to the fact that it possesses properties that are antibacterial, anesthetic, and anti-inflammatory. After applying the mixture to the tooth in question, you should then rinse it off with some warm water to remove any remnants of the solution. The remedy can be prepared by combining one drop of clove oil with either one drop of almond oil or one drop of coconut oil.

Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide, which has been lauded for its efficacy as a mild antiseptic, can also be put to use as a mouth rinse to heal inflammation and care for gums that are sensitive. This use of hydrogen peroxide, which has received praise for its effectiveness, was discovered by accident. It is recommended that you combine approximately two capfuls worth of 3% hydrogen peroxide with an amount of warm water that is equal in volume. It is recommended that you spit out the solution after swishing it around in your mouth for a period of thirty seconds first. After using the hydrogen peroxide, thoroughly clean your mouth with water to remove any lingering residue. This should be done as soon as you are finished using the peroxide.

Saltwater rinse

Because of its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, a saltwater rinse is a time-honored treatment that is still recommended by a good number of dental professionals. Your oral hygiene will significantly improve as a result, as the bacteria that are currently in your mouth will be removed. Simply take about two cups of warm water, add half a teaspoon of salt to it, and then swish it around in your mouth for a few minutes before spitting it out. This should be done three times. This should be of some use. It is essential that you carry out these actions multiple times.

Turmeric

Curcumin is a compound that can help relieve pain and is also well-known for the anti-inflammatory effects that it possesses. Turmeric is a good source of curcumin. To alleviate pain and sensitivity in your teeth, make a paste on your gums using either fresh or dried turmeric and some water, and apply it there. Turmeric can be used either fresh or dried. You could also try rubbing a mixture onto your gums twice a day that consists of a half teaspoon of salt and a half teaspoon of mustard oil. The mixture that was described earlier would then get these additional ingredients added to it. To be clear, no one wants to deal with the discomfort of sensitive teeth.

However, maintaining a high standard of oral hygiene on a daily basis, in addition to taking a few extra precautions here and there, will go a long way toward resolving the issue. On the other hand, it is possible to circumvent the majority of the problems associated with tooth sensitivity. Just make sure to keep your dental appointments on a consistent basis. Yes, it's our mantra. And it's a pretty sound one all things considered.

Tooth Enamel: Loss, Erosion, Treatment

May 19, 2023
enamel

What exactly is enamel of the teeth?

The thin layer of enamel that covers the outside of your teeth is known as the dentine of teeth because it is the toughest tissue in the human body. Hydroxyapatite is the predominant mineral found in tooth enamel, which makes up the majority of this substance. Enamel, which is semi-translucent and only contributes partially to the color of a person's teeth, might be light yellow, gray, or even a bluish-white tint. However, enamel's color is not the only factor that determines the color of a person's teeth. If enamel is damaged, the body will not be able to regenerate it because it does not contain any living cells. Once it's gone, there's no getting it back.

What functions does the tooth enamel serve?

Tooth enamel is an important component in our teeth's defense against tooth decay. Additionally, it assists in protecting them from the wear and strain that can be produced by regular activities including as chewing, biting, and grinding.

The formation of enamel as a considerable barrier helps to protect the interior layers of the teeth, such as the dentin, pulp, blood vessels, and nerves. It helps protect these internal structures against acidic substances and plaque, as well as hot and cold foods and drinks. Loss of enamel can expose the dentin and pulp layers of the teeth, which can then get damaged.

How can I tell whether the enamel on my teeth is wearing away?

It may be difficult to recognize the signs that your enamel is wearing away. Here are some of the most fundamental symptoms to look out for:

enamel

• Colour

It is possible that you have enamel erosion if you have noticed a change in the color of your teeth. Examine the surface of the tooth for a coating that is yellow or shiny.

• An increase in both pain and sensitivity

Increased dental sensitivity, which can ultimately result in pain, is one of the signs of enamel loss that is overlooked the most. Does it pain when you eat or drink something that is too hot, too cold, too sweet, or too cold and too hot? If it aches a lot, it's possible that you've progressed to a later stage of enamel erosion.

• The abrasive quality

Roughness around the borders of the teeth, cracks, chips, or indentations can all be signs of enamel loss in its early stages.

• Openness and honesty

Near the margins of the teeth, which are exposed when you bite, erosion can make the teeth appear see-through.

• Glistening flecks

Shiny patches are another early indicator that enamel is beginning to wear away. If you notice shiny patches on your teeth, then you may already be suffering the early stages of enamel erosion.

What causes enamel erosion?

Acids from the meals and drinks we consume are often to blame for enamel erosion, as they are the substances that can be found in our bodies. In a normal situation, the acid in your mouth would be neutralized by the saliva. On the other hand, your enamel will wear away over time if you consume a lot of acidic foods or beverages or if you often skip brushing your teeth. It's not a question of whether, but rather when it will happen.

If you are concerned about how much acidic food and drink you are getting into your body, you should consume the following in moderate amounts: Carbonated beverages, sweet foods such as ice cream, syrup, and caramel, starchy meals such as white bread and cake, and fruit juices (hello, erosion city!) are all bad for your teeth.

A dry mouth can also cause enamal erosion because saliva helps to neutralize the effects of acids on the teeth and gums. Dry mouth, which can lead to erosion of the teeth, is a side effect of taking some drugs on a regular basis. Antihistamines and aspirin are two examples of them.

Bruxism, which is the medical term for the habit of grinding one's teeth, will obviously wear away the enamel, as will acid reflux, which is caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease and bulimia; both of these conditions cause stomach acid to reach the mouth.

Loss of enamel can be a symptom of acid reflux, generally referred to as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In addition to causing enamel to deteriorate, the eating disorder bulimia causes individuals to purge their stomachs of food. The problem, which occurs in both scenarios, is that acid from the stomach is making its way into the mouth and damaging the teeth.

What's done is done; you can't get enamel back. In order to safeguard your smile, it is critical to practice good oral hygiene and take preventative actions before any enamel loss occurs. In the following part of this guide, we will discuss ways to protect your teeth from enamel erosion.

How do you avoid enamel loss?

You are in luck since there are a lot of preventative steps you can take to protect your enamel from wearing away. Here are some extra things you can do to maintain good oral hygiene, in addition to the obvious measures of brushing, flossing, and going to the dentist on a regular basis.

• Try to limit your intake of sugary foods!

It is absolutely necessary to emphasize this point. Sugar provides nourishment for the bacteria that live in your mouth, which in turn produce acids that erode enamel. Therefore, control your consumption. You should try to limit the quantity of added sugars in your diet and instead get your sugar from whole-food sources, such a piece of fruit. This is an excellent place to start.

• Chewing gum should be done after meals.

Chewing gum stimulates saliva production, which in turn helps to neutralize stomach acids. After eating, choose a gum without sugar and chew it for at least half an hour in order to stimulate the production of digestive juices. It has been demonstrated that xylitol can lower the risk of tooth decay, making xylitol gum an excellent option.

• You must wait before you brush your teeth!

After eating breakfast, lunch, or dinner, do not rush to brush your teeth right away. Please wait a half hour before brushing your teeth, since doing so too soon can cause enamel to wear away. Choose a fluoride toothpaste to use when you do clean your teeth.

• Dairy products are a great way to round out your meal.

After you have finished eating, sip a glass of milk to help neutralize any stomach acid that may have been produced.

• Drink more water

Drinking more water will help you stay hydrated throughout the day, both inside and outside of your mouth. (That's just sound advise for pretty much everything there is to know about life.)

Is it possible to rebuild the enamel on teeth?

Even if your enamel has already begun to wear away, there is still a chance that it can be restored. While it is not possible to restore enamel, it is possible to slow the harm being done to it. Enamel can be made stronger by increasing the amount of minerals it contains.

enamel

Enamel remineralization

Remineralization is a procedure that is used to strengthen enamel and restore the mineral content of teeth. Products that include high concentrations of calcium phosphate or fluoride assist remineralize the enamel in a natural way before it reaches a stage where it can no longer be repaired. This method is only useful in the beginning phases of the erosion process. You should be able to get the most out of the remineralization procedure even if the enamel of your teeth is just slightly compromised. Have a look at these tried-and-true home treatments.

  • You should brush your teeth at least twice every day. These steps eradicate the microorganisms that are to blame for the erosion. In addition, make sure to floss your teeth at least twice a day in order to eliminate plaque and avoid gum disease.
  • Brushing your teeth with toothpaste containing fluoride will help the process of reinforcing your teeth and will prevent further mineral loss.
  • Consume probiotics such as salivarius, rhamnosus, or reuteri.
  • Finally, gargle with a remineralizing mouthwash at least twice daily. (This phase in particular feels wonderful as well.)

If the condition of your teeth is such that remineralization would not help, you should make an appointment with a dentist to examine the other treatment options available to you. These may involve getting fillings done, getting veneers placed, or even getting crowns put on. Each each situation will be unique.

There Are 6 Ways To Avoid Getting Cavities.

May 12, 2023

The rate at which our patients accumulate decay, also known as cavities, is something that all dentists face as a challenge that is difficult to overcome. When it comes to the state of your oral health, it is most likely one of your greatest concerns as well. Going to the dentist and being told that you have a cavity has got to be one of the most dreaded experiences ever, right? No one! Because cavities are such a significant issue that can have an impact on your entire health and wellness, I thought it would be helpful to discuss some things that you can do to assist in preventing cavities and any other type of tooth decay from developing. I don't care if you find some of these pointers to be common sense; but, I do want you to realize that the information presented here is accurate. Therefore, if you desire teeth that are healthy and free from cavities, you should make sure to apply the advice from this blog post into your daily life.

cavities

Why do we get cavities and how do I avoid them?

Allow me to begin by explaining the process of cavity formation, in the event that you are unfamiliar with it. An oral cavity develops when an acidic environment (pH level of 5.5 or below) is generated in the mouth, and bacteria then begin to eat away at the enamel that covers the teeth of the affected individual. If the cavity is not treated, it can result in more significant dental problems as well as health problems; thus, I want to assist you in preventing cavities before they even begin to develop in your teeth.

Now that we have everything out of the way, let's go over these 6 steps one by one!

  1. First and foremost, you should brush your teeth at least twice a day.

The first step that you need to do is to ensure that you clean your teeth at least twice a day, and preferably after every meal. It never ceases to amaze me how many individuals only clean their teeth once a day, despite the fact that I see it so frequently. Brushing your teeth is the first thing you should do to protect yourself from acquiring cavities. Brushing your teeth twice a day should be something you do every single day, regardless of how much you have going on in your life or how little time you have available to devote to this task. It is imperative that you give the front of your teeth, the sides of your teeth, and the back of your teeth a very thorough cleaning when you practice good oral hygiene. I usually recommend saying it for at least two minutes! Check out this page if you're unsure how to wash your teeth in the most effective manner possible. Another aspect of oral hygiene that is addressed when one brushes their teeth is the tongue's thorough cleansing. Therefore, you should make certain that you are giving that a high priority as well.

  • Make Sure You Floss Every Day

Now, let me explain why this is important: This stage is frequently skipped by so many people. It is true that if you do not floss your teeth, you will not be able to clean a significant portion of the surface of your teeth! Let me paint a picture for you. When you don't floss your teeth, you essentially end up with these problems:

You eat, bacteria begin to consume the food you ate, then the bacteria release their excrement onto your teeth (yeah, I know this sounds horrible, but it's true), and the waste these bacteria create is very acidic. If you don't brush your teeth regularly, bacteria will build up, which will result in an increase in waste production, and voilà! A hole has developed! Plaque and bacteria that accumulate on your teeth will eventually harden to the point where you will no longer be able to remove it using dental floss and a toothbrush. This process can take anywhere from a few hours to a day or even a few days, depending on the person, but as you can see, it does not take very long. To have the hardened plaque, also known as calculus, removed from your teeth, you will need to make an appointment with either your dentist or hygienist. So the next time you feel like skipping this step, think about all of the bacteria that are happily munching away on the food that is stuck between your teeth, and how their waste is being excreted directly onto your teeth and gums.

It is important to floss your teeth at least once every day. If you are only going to floss once, you should do it before bed. However, if you are only going to floss twice a day, you need make sure that you do it at least twice a day.

Additionally, floss can clean beneath your gums, which your toothbrush cannot do, while your toothbrush cannot reach. Flossing maintains the health of your gums, which in turn maintains the health of your underlying bone structure, which in turn maintains the health of your teeth and ensures that they remain firmly planted in your jaw bone. Consequently, you should allot an additional minute or two to ensure that you floss your teeth.

  • Rinse Your Mouth With Mouthwash After Brushing Your Teeth

After you have finished brushing your teeth, you should also make sure to rinse your mouth thoroughly with some kind of mouthwash. A last cleansing of your mouth can be accomplished with the help of mouthwash, which also assists in the removal of anything that may have been overlooked. In a nutshell, it helps minimize the amount of bacteria that are present in your mouth, and it also helps clean your gums and cheeks! It will only take you one minute, but it will do a great deal to assist you in warding off cavities. After you have finished brushing and flossing your teeth, you should consider using a quality mouthwash. I prefer mouthwashes that are alcohol-free and contain remineralizing agents such as fluoride or xylitol. Fluoride and xylitol are two examples of these types of ingredients. This will help in preventing cavities.

  • Consume Significantly More Of It

One of the most underappreciated ways to keep your mouth clean and your teeth cavity-free is to drink enough of water. If you don't have a toothbrush handy, you can always just take a few sips of water and give your mouth a quick rinse instead of brushing your teeth. It's not quite as effective as brushing your teeth, using dental floss, or rinsing your mouth with mouthwash, but it's a heck of a lot better than just letting food stay in your mouth, which can be harmful to your teeth. It is important to thoroughly clean your mouth with water after eating anything, whether it be a meal or something else entirely, and to remove as much food and debris from your teeth as possible.

  • Maintain Regular Appointments With Your Dentist
cavities

It is imperative that you maintain consistent dental care by going to the dentist on a regular basis to avoid getting cavities. Typically, once a year for an exam and some check-up X-rays (although everyone is different, so talk to your dentist about this), and anywhere from two to four times a year for cleanings (depending on what your dentist or hygienist prescribe). I am aware that finding the correct dentist for you or simply determining how frequently you should go to the dentist can be a challenge; yet, going to the dentist on a regular basis is essential. If you go to the dentist on a regular basis, you will either be able to prevent problems from occurring in the first place or, if you have already experienced the beginning stages of some problems, you will be able to prevent them from worsening to an unacceptable degree. It is the most effective approach to stop cavities from developing in the first place or from getting worse. If you haven't been to the dentist in a while, now is the perfect time to schedule an appointment with them.

  • Decrease Your Intake of Sugar

As a final piece of advice, I want to encourage you to make every effort possible to reduce the amount of sugar you consume (click here to watch my video on how you can cut sugar out of your diet). I am aware that putting this into practice is not always as simple as it sounds. Sugar, on the other hand, is one of the primary culprits in the development of cavities and other dental problems that result from it. Consider the quantity of sugar that you add to the foods that you eat, the snacks that you consume, and even the coffee that you consume. The issue is that there are a lot of hidden sugars, and as a result, there are instances when you are not even aware that you are consuming it! You may find out more about some of those sneaky sugars if you watch the video that I linked to in this blog post. Therefore, if you want to reduce the likelihood of developing cavities, you should reduce the amount of sugar that you put into your body on a daily basis.

I really hope that these have gotten you thinking about the many various things that you can do to lower the possibility of acquiring cavities in your teeth. In point of fact, it is not quite as difficult as it may seem. I have no doubt that you are aware of the bulk of these things, but it never hurts to have a gentle nudge in the right direction every now and again.

Tips to Make Dentistry More Affordable

April 27, 2023
affordable

Looking for an affordable dentist in Summerlin? Although finding "affordable" dental care isn't always as easy as it seems, there are practical measures you can take to cut down on the costs of maintaining your oral health and the money you'll have to spend on dental treatments in the future.

If you can't believe it, it's not that difficult to locate an affordable priced dentist in the Summerlin area. It really depends on how you go about maintaining your oral health!

Take note of the following essential guidelines:

The importance of affordable preventative dental care

Most dental disorders are easily prevented. When detected in their earliest stages, problems such as tooth decay and gum disease are amenable to treatment and can even be reversed if recognized early enough (only if the tooth is just starting to demineralize, not if a cavity has already ruptured through the enamel.) However, this requires you to practice proper oral hygiene at home by flossing on a daily basis and setting up frequent appointments with your dental team for exams and cleanings. It is possible to find reasonably priced dental care in Summerlin provided that you pay attention to avoiding the most prevalent tooth illnesses.

Take Care of Issues as Soon as They Become Visible to You

It is a common fallacy that you do not require the services of a dentist in Summerlin until the pain in your tooth becomes unbearable. This is one of the most common myths. In point of fact, "fixing" your teeth as soon as an issue is discovered is the most cost-effective method for repairing them. This means even if there are no obvious signs of pain or discomfort being experienced by the patient.

For instance, if you are seeing Dr. Cohan for your six-month checkup and we find a tiny cavity on your normal X-rays, the most affordable course of action would be to go ahead and have the area filled in. This would be the case even if the cavity isn't particularly large. If this does not happen, the infection will just continue to progress deeper into the tooth, and it may even spread to neighboring teeth. At this point, the treatment progresses from a simple filling to a crown or several fillings on a variety of teeth, depending on the severity of the cavity. Decay, fissures, and other flaws cannot be repaired once they have been caused. Therefore, addressing them as soon as feasible is the treatment choice that will save you the most money. Restorations that are less extensive will almost always be more economical than those that are more extensive.

Choose the one that will cause you the least amount of discomfort.

Family

Our Summerlin dental practice uses cutting-edge equipment, which enables our dentist to do operations in significantly less time and to place more precise restorations. For instance, rather than going for the more common restoration made of amalgam (metal), you could be better off getting a little white filling instead. Why? Because the white version requires less dental correction, attaches flush to your enamel, and has a lower risk of leaking or causing cracking around it five to ten years down the road. Sometimes shelling out a few extra bucks can end up saving you more money and being more affordable in the long run when it comes to your oral health.

An additional illustration would be the decision to save your tooth by restoring it with a crown rather than immediately opting for extraction. As a result of the excess space that is created in your mouth, the other teeth will begin to shift, which will lead to additional difficulties. At that point, you will need to decide between getting an implant or a bridge. In the end, Dr. Cohan or any other affordable dentist in Summerlin will want to assist you in maintaining your natural teeth for the longest period of time feasible.

Make Sure to Visit a Dentist Who Has the Latest Equipment

It's possible that the dentist in Summerlin that charges the lowest prices is also the one who uses the most up-to-date technology and equipment, both of which demand significant financial investments on their part. Such as laser dentistry, computerized X-rays, or scanning in three dimensions (3D). Why? Because such resources make it possible to diagnose dental disease sooner and reduce the amount of treatment a patient requires to maintain their mouth healthy, it is important to have access to such resources.

Don't Let Your Insurance Plan Determine Your Health Care Decisions

A significant number of individuals will not seek dental treatment unless it is paid for by their insurance provider, which makes it more affordable. Unfortuitously, the vast majority of dental insurance policies are structured to emphasize the importance of preventative care over extensive treatment. That means that your coverage will pay more for a cleaning and exam twice a year than it will for a few fillings every other year. This is because cleanings and exams are considered preventative care. If you let your insurance company decide the treatments your smile receives, you could be putting your teeth's health and look at risk in the broader scheme of things. Unfortunately, the more extensive your oral health demands become, the more likely it is that your dental insurance will pay out less, making it less affordable.

If All Else Fails, Figure Out How to Pay for Your Treatment

Waiting until the tooth hurts and then having to pay for a root canal and crown is a more expensive option than getting a cavity filled at a reasonable cost on a monthly basis rather than getting it taken care of right away. When you work with a cheap dentist in Summerlin, you may be able to obtain 0% financing through options such as CareCredit. This will allow you to immediately begin treatment instead of delaying it further down the road. It is possible that paying for the procedure in full with financing will be less expensive for you in the long run than having your insurance pay for a more extensive operation in a few months' time.

Make an appointment for your six-month checkup at Summerlin Dental Solutions right now to learn more about how you can save money on dental care in the Summerlin area.

Home Treatments and Remedies For Gingivitis

April 20, 2023

ging

Inflammation of the gums, also known as gingivitis, is one of the most common oral diseases found in North America. The following is a list of the most effective home treatments and preventative measures for puffy gums....

In the United States, adults aged 30 and older who are nearly half (47.2% of all adults) suffer from some form of gum disease. This condition worsens with age, makes daily life unpleasant, and has a significant negative impact on quality of life. There are a lot of people who struggle with gum diseases like gingivitis, and we have a tendency to believe that there is no effective solution to this unpleasant problem. Is there a treatment for gingivitis? Is there anything that we can do at home to treat the gingivitis that we have? Let's discuss.

What exactly is this gingivitis?

Inflammation of the gums, also known as gingiva, is referred to as gingivitis. Gingivitis represents the first stage of gum disease. It is a form of periodontal disease that can be reversed, and it is characterized by inflammation that is confined to the gingiva rather than spreading to the tooth's other supporting structures. After cavities, gingivitis is the oral condition that is seen the most frequently and is considered to be the second most significant oral ailment. About three-quarters of the world's population suffers from this relatively mild form of gum disease.

Gingivitis is almost always caused by neglecting one's oral hygiene, which is the primary offender in this crime. Inadequate dental hygiene promotes the growth of plaque on the teeth and causes inflammation of the gum tissues, both of which can lead to periodontal disease. Plaque, when left untreated, can harden and turn into tartar or calculus, both of which are bacteria magnets. The gums become inflamed as a result of the accumulation of more and more bacteria, as well as the irritation caused by plaque and tartar.

How can you tell if you have gingivitis? The following is a list of the most common signs and symptoms:

  • Tender or puffy gums
  • The gums have already begun to recede.
  • Unhealthy breath
  • Bleeding gums when you brush your teeth or floss your teeth

Is there any treatment for gingivitis?

It is necessary to diagnose gum disease at an early stage and begin treatment for it as soon as possible in order to reverse or even cure gingivitis. Because of this, it is extremely important to visit the dentist on a consistent basis, maintain good oral hygiene, carefully examine your gums, and pay attention to any changes that you notice. Your gums will be thoroughly examined, and the dentist will make recommendations regarding the treatment that will benefit you the most.

Remember that gingivitis can be cured or reversed if it is discovered and treated early on. Do not disregard any changes in the appearance of your gums, as well as any tenderness or other symptoms. And most importantly, make sure you maintain good oral hygiene and schedule regular appointments with your dentist.

What home remedies can I use to treat gingivitis?

gingivitis

In spite of the fact that professional dental care is necessary for the effective treatment of gingivitis, there are still many home treatment options available to choose from. In the following paragraphs, we are going to look at how to treat gum disease without going to the dentist and discuss some helpful things you can do at home. Bear in mind that the use of these remedies is in no way intended to serve as an alternative to regular visits to the dentist. Let's get the fundamentals out of the way first.

1) Step up your dental hygiene routine

Dental hygiene is absolutely necessary for both the treatment and prevention of gingivitis, and this point cannot be emphasized enough. Brushing your teeth at least twice per day and ideally after each meal or snack is the best way to ward off gingivitis and even reverse its effects. Because gums are particularly sensitive and tender at this time, it is prudent to use a gentle toothbrush or an electric toothbrush, which are both more effective at removing tartar and plaque than a standard toothbrush. You should also floss your teeth every day and rinse your mouth out with mouthwash, in addition to brushing your teeth regularly. Without maintaining good oral hygiene, none of the other home remedies or strategies will be effective.

You could also use a toothpaste formulated specifically for gingivitis or one that contains a lot of fluoride (almost all drug stores will provide options for this).

2) Oil pulling

Oil pulling is an age-old dental hygiene practice that has its origins in India and has been practiced there for centuries. The practice of using oil to pull on one's teeth in order to whiten them, freshen one's breath, and treat conditions such as gum disease has been utilized by a great number of cultures throughout history and continues to be used today. To perform oil pulling, simply swish some oil around in your mouth for twenty to thirty minutes. This method reduces the number of bacteria that are harmful and gets rid of toxins. One study, for instance, found that rinsing the mouth with coconut oil for ten minutes per day significantly reduced the amount of Streptococcus mutans, one of the most common types of bacteria found in the mouth and a significant factor in the formation of plaque.

Both coconut oil and arimedadi oil have been shown to be effective treatments for gingivitis. Lauric acid, which can be found in coconut oil, has been shown to have beneficial effects against both microbes and inflammation. Oil pulling with arimedadi has been shown to reduce gingivitis symptoms and slow the growth of plaque on teeth. It is necessary to place one to two teaspoons of oil in the mouth, swish it around, then spit it out. Next, the mouth should be rinsed with water, and then the water should be spit out. Finally, the teeth should be brushed, and a full glass of water should be consumed.

3) Saltwater rinse

One of the most straightforward treatments for gingivitis is to gargle with a solution that consists of salt water. It has been shown that drinking saltwater can help speed up the healing process. Rinsing the mouth with salt water appears to soothe irritated gums brought on by gingivitis, according to the available evidence. This straightforward home treatment can be administered by mixing three-quarters of a teaspoon of salt with a glass of warm water, gargling with the mixture, and then spitting it out.

4) Turmeric paste

People have been using turmeric as a home remedy for a variety of illnesses for many centuries. Because of its ability to reduce inflammation and fight fungal infections, this spice can also play a role in the treatment of gingivitis. Gingivitis can be treated with turmeric gels that can be found in health food stores, but it is also possible to make a paste out of turmeric that can be used instead. It is necessary to combine about one-half of a teaspoon of turmeric with an equal amount of mustard oil and salt in order to heal gums that are inflamed. After directly applying the paste to the gums and waiting ten minutes, rinse the mouth thoroughly.

5) Aloe vera

Plants of the genus Aloe are commonly used for their medicinal qualities. This wonderful plant can also assist in the treatment of gingivitis and in lowering plaque levels. Just swish some pure aloe vera juice around in your mouth for about a minute and a half before spitting it out. Aloe vera should be applied twice or three times per day for optimal results.

6) Baking soda

Baking soda and water can be combined to make a paste that can be used to brush teeth and gums. This paste has the ability to neutralize acids that contribute to gum disease. One study compared the effectiveness of plaque-removing toothpaste containing baking soda to that of toothpaste without baking soda. They discovered that toothpaste with baking soda was significantly more effective.

7) Clove paste

When it comes to the management of gingivitis, topical treatments can be of tremendous assistance. Some examples include clove paste. Clove has anti-inflammatory properties and can help prevent plaque buildup. The procedure is straightforward: either finely mince one teaspoon of cloves or soak a cotton ball in clove oil and apply it to the surface of the cotton ball. After that, rub a cotton ball that has been covered in cloves onto the gums in a gentle circular motion, and then rinse with water after one minute.

8) A mouthrinse made at home

gingi

Gingivitis can be treated with a mouthwash that you make yourself, which is something that many people are unaware of. The following are some examples:

• Mouthwash made with lemongrass oil: Dilute two to three drops of lemongrass essential oil in water, swirl it around your mouth, and then spit it out. You should do this thrice a day.

• For a mouthwash containing tea tree oil, mix three drops of tea tree oil with one cup of warm water (since tea tree oil can interact with some medications, consult your doctor first).

• To make a mouthwash with sage, combine boiling water with either one tablespoon of dried sage or two tablespoons of fresh sage. Keep on low heat for ten minutes, then strain the liquid and set it aside to cool.

• To make a mouthwash out of guava leaves, crush six guava leaves and add them to one cup of water that has been brought to a boil. Keep the mixture at a simmer for fifteen minutes, then set it aside to cool.

9) Green tea

Green tea contains a high concentration of anti-inflammatory antioxidants, which reduce swelling and may inhibit the inflammatory response of the body to bacteria found in the oral cavity. Gingivitis is characterized by inflammation and bleeding, both of which may be alleviated by drinking green tea. Green tea contains polyphenols, which have been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria that can cause gingivitis.

10) Abstain from sugar and cigarettes.

Cigarettes can cause irritation to your gums and make the buildup of bacteria in your mouth worse. Sugar is another factor that works against maintaining healthy gums and teeth. Gingivitis treatment also involves making changes to one's lifestyle, such as decreasing the amount of sugar one consumes and giving up tobacco products.

What are some products that can be purchased without a prescription that can treat gum infections?

Since you now know how to treat gingivitis at home, it would be helpful to mention some over-the-counter products that will be of assistance to you in your efforts to eliminate the condition. You may want to:

  • Use antiseptic mouthwash on a consistent basis to rinse the mouth.
  • Place gels on the gums themselves directly (in case of pain)
  • We recommend using an electric toothbrush.
  • You should use toothpaste that fights bacteria

Make an effort to avoid medicating yourself. Find a dentist who is conveniently located near you and ask them for recommendations on an appropriate toothbrush, gel, or mouthwash that you can use.

What kind of treatment do dentists use for gingivitis?

It is essential to take preventative measures and begin treatment as soon as possible in order to stop the progression of this gum disease. If you or a member of your family struggle with gingivitis, you should probably think about making an appointment at the dentist's office. Professional dental cleaning, also known as "scale and polish" or "scale and root planing," plays an important part in the treatment of gingivitis and is typically performed by dentists. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums that can lead to tooth loss. At the beginning of the cleaning process, the dentist will use various instruments, such as a laser or an ultrasonic device, to eradicate any and all traces of plaque, tartar, and bacterial residue.

The removal of tartar and bacteria from the surfaces of the teeth and from underneath the gums is the objective of scaling. On the other hand, the goal of root planning is to remove bacterial products that have been produced as a result of inflammation. In addition to this, it polishes the surfaces of the roots and prevents further tartar and bacterial accumulation, both of which are obstacles to the healing process.

Because misaligned teeth or crowns and bridges that do not fit properly can aggravate gum disease in some patients, dental restoration may be necessary for those patients. This makes it more difficult to eliminate plaque during a daily dental hygiene routine. Because of this, a dentist might suggest dental restoration to their patient. Gingivitis management might become less of a challenge if these issues were resolved.

Even though gingivitis is likely to clear up after a thorough professional cleaning, we still need to make a point of practicing good dental hygiene on a daily basis. A patient may also ask their dentist for assistance in developing a routine to perform at home in order to maintain healthy gums. Gingivitis can be avoided and the quality of one's dental health significantly improved by maintaining regular checkups. Be sure to keep your regular dental appointments.

Pain-Free Dentistry. How Do We Ensure Your Trip To The Dentist is Pain-Free?

April 13, 2023
pain-free

Pain-Free trip to the dentist?!? The phrase "go to the dentist" conjures up images of a terrifying and excruciating experience for many people. It is a fact that dental operations used to be somewhat excruciating before the invention of the technology we have today. Today, at Summerlin Dental Solutions, painful procedures are a thing of the past.

Dental procedures that were notoriously excruciating have thankfully become a thing of the past.

Your visit to the dentist can now be painless and even delightful, all thanks to advancements in dental technology and sedation techniques.

Your visit will not be painful because Dr. Cohan and her staff have taken the necessary safeguards.

Anesthetics at the site

When patients find out they need even a very modest dental procedure, they frequently experience anxiety. This worry is natural, but be assured that we will do everything in our power to ensure that your experience is as stress-free and pleasant as possible.

Before undergoing a relatively modest surgery such as a cavity filling, extraction, or root canal, a patient will receive an injection of local anesthetic in order to numb the treatment region. Local anesthetic can be used to perform dental treatments on you while you are awake, and you will not feel a thing during or after the procedure.

When compared to sedation dentistry, this option is more convenient because it allows you to drive yourself to and from the appointment, and you can even go back to work or school right away afterward. The most time- and resource-efficient type of anesthesia is local anesthetic.

pain-free

A significant number of patients have anxiety on the possibility that their local anesthetic would stop working partway through their surgery, resulting in excruciating pain. Please let us know if you feel as though the anesthetic is starting to wear off. We are going to pause the process in order to provide another injection to you.

Even though you will be numbed by the local anesthetic before your treatment, many patients are nevertheless anxious about the needle itself. Numbing Gel. The fear of needles, also known as trypanophobia, is a prevalent phobia that affects a great number of children and adults.

Before administering the injection of local anesthesia, Dr. Cohan may first apply a numbing gel to the gums in order to ensure that you do not feel the needle and it is pain-free. In point of fact, many patients say that they were unaware that they had been injected at all.

Dentistry under Sedation is Pain-Free

Sedation dentistry is advantageous for more lengthy dental treatments, such as implant placement, as well as for patients who are excessively apprehensive.

It is acceptable for the numbing gel and the local anesthetic not to be sufficient to keep certain patients comfortable throughout their procedures. During the time that you are having dental work done, you may be put to sleep using either general anesthetic or IV sedation.

In addition, certain individuals require multiple dental procedures to be completed at the same time. Because it allows dentists to do multiple procedures simultaneously, sedation dentistry can help you save time, reduce stress, and alleviate anxiety. If you are going to have sedation dentistry done at your visit, please bring a friend or family member along with you who can take you home afterward.

6 Common Oral Diseases In People Under 40 That Can Be Prevented

March 23, 2023
disease

Do you think of diseases when you think about your oral health? What you put into your mouth travels down your digestive tract in the first stage, and the food you consume has an effect on the rest of your body and can cause disease. However, the way in which you care for your gums, teeth, and mouth in general will have an effect on a number of different aspects of your overall health.

There are several disorders that can affect the mouth, and some of these diseases might progress to more serious consequences. (Always keep in mind that early intervention is the most effective approach to increase the likelihood of treatment success. (Don't forget about your own mouth!)

AND maybe the most pervasive misconception of all is the idea that only elderly people have major oral health issues. Untrue! Even if the likelihood of developing oral disorders rises with advancing age, that does not mean that younger people have no cause for concern.

There are six different oral diseases that might affect younger people.

1. Gum disease

Diseases of the gums, often known as "periodontal" diseases, can take on a variety of forms and can lead to painful swelling as well as changes in the structure of the bite. According to studies, periodontal disease is not only common in individuals of advanced age; it also occurs frequently in young adults and adolescents.

2. Gingivitis

disease 3

Inflammation of the gums is a symptom of gingivitis, which is a disorder that can affect anyone. This is a condition that manifests itself in both older adults and younger adults. In most cases, the condition is brought on by the accumulation of bacteria and plaque on a person's teeth. This particular form of periodontal disease is referred to as "periodontal gingivitis." Although it might not be as devastating, it can lead to more serious health concerns if left unchecked.

3. Dental sensitivity and the development of cavities

Decay of teeth can occasionally begin as early as childhood in some people. This can lead to various potential effects. If you have dental decay, your teeth may become more fragile as a result of the disease. This makes it more likely that you will crack or break a tooth, which is something you should want to avoid doing for as long as possible. When you have cavities in your teeth, sensitive teeth are almost a given to follow.

4. Endodontic treatment

When the crown of a tooth becomes loose or falls off, you may require a dental operation known as a root canal, which is performed in the dentist's office. It is a typical operation that is frequently carried out on young individuals, and it is not a very beneficial one. It entails the removal of the tooth's root, which helps to minimize sensitivity as well as pain. After that, a brand new crown is affixed on the very top.

5. TMJ disorder

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder is yet another ailment that can affect people of any age. This disorder affects the jaw, and as a result, a crackling sound can be heard in the jaw whenever the patient opens and closes their mouth. A great deal of people also report experiencing pain and stiffness.

6. Oral cancer

Oral cancer is a dreaded disease despite its high incidence rate. A dentist is trained to recognize the earliest warning signs of oral cancer and can devise an effective treatment strategy to stop the disease from progressing and spreading.

disease

The function of your dental practitioner

People who seek out a dentist typically do so because they are experiencing discomfort in their oral cavity, most commonly in the form of a toothache. It is highly recommended that you get in touch with a dentist at this time; nevertheless, this should not be the only occasion on which you look for one. Everyone requires the services of a dentist that they visit on a consistent basis.

Early in one's life, one should give some thought to initiating preventative dental care. Even in young children, the sooner in life routine dental examinations begin, the lower the likelihood of more serious oral diseases developing.

To get started, schedule an appointment with your dentist at least once every year (ideally twice). After that, make an appointment with your dentist to have a complete checkup done on your teeth, gums, and the tissue around them. When searching for a dentist in your area, you can also make an appointment for a dental cleaning. You can locate a local dentist who has a track record of success with the assistance of a website such as OpenCare.

Conclusion

The maintenance and improvement of one's oral health should be a top priority for people of all ages. Regrettably, many younger people have the misconception that problems such as periodontal disease and cancer of the oral cavity exclusively affect older people. Despite this, a significant number of persons under the age of 40 suffer from these illnesses. Just keep in mind that you should be aware of the potential dangers and acknowledge the significance of seeing Dr. Cohan at Summerlin Dental Solutions as part of your plan for maintaining good dental hygiene.

What Kind of Effects Vaping Can Have On Your Dental Health?

March 17, 2023
vaping

People are now free to light up whenever they like because vaping is less harmful than smoking, right?

A significant number of young people currently believe that vaping is a risk-free alternative to smoking and have therefore begun to embrace this trend. In 2017, 11.7% of high school students reported using electronic cigarettes. [Citation needed] After only one more year, in 2019, that figure had already increased to 27.5%. In 2019, even 10.5% of middle school students were using electronic cigarettes.

In 2020, the global market for electronic cigarettes was estimated to be worth $15.04 billion, and it is anticipated to expand at an astounding compound yearly growth rate of 28.1% until 2028.

However, safer does not always equate to risk-free. Although it's true that vaping is safer than smoking cigarettes, you're still just switching one poison for another when you do it. Let's discuss.

What is vaping?

Vaping, often known as electronic smoking, is a technique of smoking that is marketed as being safer than cigarettes. E-juice, which may contain flavorings, nicotine, a number of other substances, and occasionally cannabis, is aerosolized by a heated metal coil into a vapor that the user inhales. The user may also inhale the vapor directly from the coil.

Vaping, despite the fact that it may leave a mild odor, does not smell like smoking traditional cigarettes. In addition, the marketing of electronic cigarettes is done in such a way as to make you believe that they just release innocuous water vapor.

However, the assumption that you are breathing in a "vapor," which may give the impression that it is harmless, is incorrect. The substance that you are inhaling is more of an aerosol, similar to the kind that you would receive out of a can of hairspray or bug killer. And just like secondhand smoke from cigarettes, breathing in secondhand aerosol can be harmful to others around you.

Effects of nicotine on one's health

Most vaping liquids contain nicotine (even the ones that are labeled nicotine-free). This substance can have potentially life-threatening effects on your cardiovascular system. In addition to causing your blood pressure to skyrocket, this condition can also quicken the rate at which your heart beats and restrict the blood vessels. It is also possible that it will cause the walls of the arteries to stiffen, which will contribute to a heart attack.

It is essential to be aware that, strictly speaking, electronic cigarettes contain less nicotine than conventional cigarettes do. On the other hand, users frequently take in more because it is simpler and more comfortable to puff away for a significantly longer period of time on a vape pen.

The most common oral conditions that might be brought on by vaping

What kind of effects can vaping have on dental health? Vaping not only has the potential to bring about or exacerbate a number of common dental disorders, but it also has the potential to bring about the severe health impacts that nicotine has on your cardiovascular system.

  • Cavities;
  • Tooth Sensitivity;
  • Receding Gums;
  • Dry Mouth;
  • Bad Breath (Halitosis);
  • Bruxism;
  • Gum Disease;
  •  Periodontal Disease;
  • Tooth Loss;

The human mouth is home to a diverse community of germs and bacteria, which are present in equal numbers in each person. Some of it is beneficial, since it helps to maintain the health and strength of your teeth and gums. On the other hand, some of it is harmful and can lead to the development of unpleasant conditions such as cavities and periodontal disease. The microbiome is the collective name for this assortment of beneficial and pathogenic microbes.

It is interesting to note that persons who vape have a microbiome that is comparable to people who have periodontal disease, even though vapers do not exhibit any outward symptoms of gum disease.

In addition, this study discovered that 43 percent of persons who vape had dental infections and periodontal disease, but just 28 percent of people who did not smoke had this condition. To be fair, 73% of smokers experienced concerns with their dental health, thus vaping is technically a superior alternative to smoking.

In addition to this, the nicotine can reduce the amount of saliva that is produced in your mouth. Dry mouth is not a condition that is typically observed in younger people; nonetheless, it is frequently prevalent in younger persons who use electronic cigarettes. Plaque can accumulate more quickly when saliva is not there to help wash it away. This gummy material makes a welcoming environment for pathogenic bacteria in your mouth by providing a cozy environment in which they can thrive. This, in turn, leads to an increase in the number of cases of mouth ulcers, cavities, and other problems related to oral health.

The nicotine contained in electronic cigarettes also has a muscle-stimulating effect, which can lead to or make bruxism worse (teeth grinding). Nighttime teeth grinding affects a lot of people, some of whom might not even be aware that they have a problem with it. On the other hand, discomfort in the jaw upon awakening as well as damage to the teeth are also strong indicators.

To put it succinctly, you won't have much luck finding a dentist that thinks vaping is a good idea. Dentists generally frown upon the practice.

Tobacco use and teeth that are yellow

The absence of smoke and tar in vapor produced by electronic cigarettes is one of the benefits of vaping rather than smoking conventional cigarettes. These are the primary components that contribute to the unpleasant yellowing of teeth that is commonly associated with smoking.

Vaping 2

Nicotine, one of the components that makes up the majority of e-juice, can also give the liquid a yellowish hue, although typically not to the extent that it would produce a significant shift. Some flavored e-juices contain dyes or flavorings that, over time, might cause your teeth to take on a discolored appearance.

If, on the other hand, you take care of your teeth and maintain a healthy oral hygiene routine, you shouldn't have to worry too much about yellowing or discoloration of your teeth as a result of vaping. If you think that your teeth could benefit from a little bit of whitening, bring up the subject of tooth whitening with your dentist when you go in for your next dental appointment.

Oral cancer and e-cigarette use.

At this point in time, the connection between smoking regular cigarettes and developing lung cancer is pretty much common knowledge. When electronic cigarettes initially started gaining popularity, they were frequently sold to smokers as a method that could help them kick the habit. Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly obvious that vaping comes with its own set of risks associated to cancer.

In one experiment, mice were subjected to the vapor of electronic cigarettes over the course of an entire year. After that period of time, it was discovered that these mice had a higher presence of precancerous alterations in the bladder as well as a higher incidence of lung cancer.

In addition, the use of e-cigarettes and other forms of vaping has been linked to the development of a hitherto unknown kind of lung illness. To such an extent that it has been given the name "E-Cigarette or Vaping Use-Associated Lung Injury," the condition affects the lungs (EVALI).

But what about cancer of the mouth?

At this point in time, it is not possible to gain a decent notion of the long-term implications of vaping on oral cancer because vaping is still relatively new. Nevertheless, there are a number of components that raise safety concerns. Formaldehyde, nitrosamines, and acetaldehyde are all examples of cancer-causing agents that have been discovered in electronic cigarettes.

When someone vapes, the heavy metals that are employed in the heating coil become aerosolized and are then inhaled by the person doing the vaping. Periodontal disease, inflammation, mouth cancer, and even dementia can all be brought on by prolonged contact with these metals. In addition, the aerosols from some electronic cigarettes cause DNA damage, which can ultimately result in cancer.

Tobacco use has been linked to periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is more common in people of advanced age, according to dentists, than in those of younger ages. Periodontal disease takes some time to manifest, therefore maintaining good oral hygiene can be an effective preventative measure.

However, dentists report noticing increasing occurrences of periodontal disease in younger individuals as a direct result of the growth in popularity of vaping. Vaping is typically to blame when younger patients present with periodontal disease, dry mouth, or mouth ulcers. This is especially true in patients who vape.

The nicotine that is found in e-liquids causes constriction in the blood vessels that supply nutrition to your gums and teeth. It also helps to weaken the enamel on your teeth, making it easier for the bacteria in your mouth to start eating away at your teeth and causing cavities. This makes it more likely that you may have tooth decay.

Your inflamed and compromised gums have the potential to reach a stage where they are no longer capable of adequately supporting your teeth over time. If therapy is not received, it is likely that teeth will be lost.

Should you quit vaping?

If you've been wondering to yourself, "Why should I quit vaping?" we hope that you now have a better understanding of the risks to your dental health. The marketing of vaping products would have you believe that electronic cigarettes are a healthier alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes. Despite the fact that this statement is accurate, users should be aware that safer does not necessarily mean safe and that electronic cigarettes come with their own set of risks.

Why you need to visit the dentist more frequently if you are a vaper

If you do choose to vape, you should be informed of the potential adverse effects that vaping can have on your oral health. Brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day, along with any other regular dental hygiene practices, will require an increased level of attention and care from you.

In addition, you should visit the dentist more frequently than the twice-yearly appointments that are suggested. If treated promptly by a dental professional, common oral disorders like cavities and periodontal disease can have their detrimental consequences mitigated or even eliminated completely.

Why Going To The Dentist On A Regular Basis Will End Up Saving You More Money In The Long Run.

March 10, 2023
dentist

Going to see the dentist at Summerlin Dental Solutions on a regular basis will end up saving you money in the long term.

This is for a variety of reasons, all of which will be discussed in more detail below. However, before we proceed, the most important thing to keep in mind is that this is not only about the money.

Dental problems can have a domino effect on the rest of your body. Researchers are aware of a connection between heart disease and periodontal disease; however, they do not yet have a good understanding of the nature of this association.

People who suffer from periodontal disease have an increased likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease, regardless of whether or not this oral condition is the root cause. It is important to bear in mind the risk factors associated with heart disease because it is the leading cause of death in the United States.

And if you think that the fact that you clean your teeth twice a day exempts you from the dangers of periodontal disease, you should rethink that assumption. Even with careful attention paid to dental hygiene at home on a consistent basis, everyone is susceptible to developing periodontal disease. Periodontal disease affects almost half of all persons over the age of 30, according to some estimates.

Your dentist will be able to detect tooth decay, cavities, and even oral cancer in their earliest stages if you get regular dental exams. If any of these problems are discovered in their early stages, treatment will be far simpler (and cheaper). Let's discuss.

Why maintaining a consistent visit schedule will save you more money in the long term.

Let's talk about the greenbacks now that you have a (very general) understanding of the benefits to your health. In order to receive preventative dental care, you will need to shell out some cash. Because the price of these visits builds up over time, one may wonder whether or not they wind up being less expensive than other types of dental treatment, such as restorative dental care or dental emergencies.

If you never require a restoration or find yourself in a situation requiring immediate attention, then skipping dental visits will save you money. However, how probable is that to occur? If you don't visit the dentist on a regular basis, your odds of avoiding the need for extensive dental repair are fairly low. This is because dental problems can develop slowly over time.

Let's take a look at a few of the reasons why spacing out your appointments over extended periods of time results in a higher overall bill.

1) The charges for cleanings and scaling are based on the amount of time spent: More tartar buildup equals more time spent cleaning.

The expert cleaning that the dentist performs is going to take up a significant portion of your appointment. Plaque is a sticky substance that grows on your teeth as a result of the food that you eat. The majority of this can be removed when you brush your teeth (provided that you do it in the correct manner). On the other hand, if there are any particles of plaque stuck between your teeth, over time this will eventually harden into tartar, which is extremely difficult to remove with a toothbrush.

Both of these substances provide an environment in which bacteria can thrive and multiply close to the teeth.

Plaque and tartar will be removed from your teeth in a careful and thorough manner by your dentist or dental hygienist, including from any locations that are difficult to access. The length of time needed to do this task is typically determined by how unclean your teeth are. When there is a greater accumulation of plaque and tartar, cleaning them takes significantly more time. Naturally, the lengthier the dentist session, the greater the cost of the service will be.

2) Your insurance, most likely, includes yearly minimums that must be met in order to continue coverage.

You should also take into consideration the details of your dental insurance plan. The majority of people have access to dental insurance through their place of employment. If you happen to be one of the lucky ones, you should surely make the most of this opportunity.

There are a few key operational differences between standard health insurance and dental insurance. Its primary function is not to be ready to pay the exorbitant medical bills that result from a serious accident or injury; rather, it is to pay for routine preventative treatment. Your plan may compel you to reach certain minimum charges during the year in order to encourage you to visit their establishments. To put it another way, maintaining a regular schedule for your dental checkups will be to your financial advantage.

3) It is essential to detect degradation at an early stage.

One of the reasons some people avoid going to the dentist is due to the dread of being in agony or feeling discomfort there. Dentists, on the other hand, do all in their power to alleviate their patients' discomfort and cut down on the amount of pain they feel. In point of fact, thanks to advancements in dental technology such as local anaesthetic and sedation, the majority of patients have very little discomfort during their procedures.

Having said that, larger cavities and more severe issues will still result in higher costs and greater levels of discomfort. Consider the difference in price between getting a filling and having a root canal done as an illustration.

Dental fillings are a common and routine operation. They are typically able to be performed on the spot, requiring only a brief injection of local anesthesia, and do not incur a significant cost. When you have slight dental decay that has hollowed out a hole in one of your teeth, your dentist will place a filling (after cleaning out and disinfecting the tooth that was impacted). This will be done after the tooth has been cleaned out.

Depending on the extent of the damage, a filling might cost anywhere from $150 to $350 on average.

If, on the other hand, your dentist does not have the opportunity to fill that cavity, the decay of your tooth will continue until the infection reaches the pulp, which is a soft tissue located inside your tooth. If you haven't already, you will almost certainly get a toothache or experience pain at this time, and you will have no choice but to get a root canal.

How much will it set you back to purchase that? You could wind up paying anything from $600 to $1,400 for a single tooth, depending on the market and the kind of tooth you need (molars have more roots and thus are more expensive).

4) Routine dental cleanings prevent the buildup of tartar and plaque, two factors that contribute to more severe forms of gum disease.

It is important to keep in mind that the accumulation of more plaque and tartar in a longer period of time between visits to the dentist is not the only issue to consider. Even if you only have a small amount, the longer plaque and tartar are allowed to remain on your teeth, the more time the bacteria have to create damage, and the deeper it is able to penetrate your teeth.

The situation is just going to get worse as time goes on since it is only getting deeper and more entrenched. When this happens, you will start having significant issues with your teeth. To completely repair your smile, you might even need to have some of your teeth extracted and replaced with dental restorations.

The surface of your teeth does not contain any nerves at all. Toothaches and other forms of dental pain are normally only experienced if the problem has progressed to the point where it is affecting the soft pulp located in the core of the tooth, which is where the nerves are located. That is to say, if you wait until you feel it, it may already be too late to save the tooth, thus you should not wait until you feel it.

5) Preventative medical care is less difficult and more affordable to carry out.

Regular trips to the dentist are not too expensive, particularly if you have dental insurance. If all that is required of you is a speedy cleaning, a visual inspection, and perhaps a set of dental x-rays, you can expect to be in and out of the clinic in under an hour for the cost of a copay. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our office.

If, on the other hand, you require a root canal or restoration, you should plan on several visits and care that is significantly more complex. That translates into dollar signs that are going up as well. According to the findings of a study conducted by the health insurance company Cigna, individuals who did not receive preventative dental treatment had dental costs that were 43 percent greater.

When should I next make an appointment with the dentist?

The majority of patients benefit best from seeing their doctor once every six months. Because of the unique factors affecting their oral health, certain individuals might require more frequent trips to the dentist than others. When you have located a dentist, make it a point to inquire about the frequency with which they advise patients to schedule checkups.

How much does it cost to have a checkup at the dentist?

It's possible that you've overheard some individuals griping about how expensive dental treatment is. It's possible that this is the reason you've put off going to the dentist for such a long time. On the other hand, it's highly improbable that they are upset about the price of a routine dentist appointment.

Depending on the specifics of the market in which you live, the price of a dental checkup might range anywhere from $20 (with insurance) to $500. On the other hand, any service that requires more than just a basic filling or cleaning may easily cost several thousand dollars. For instance, the price of an extraction can range anywhere from $220 to $4,000, and the price of a crown might be anywhere from $500 to $3,000. Dental implants can replace individual missing teeth for a cost ranging from $3,500 to $4,000 per implant.

With just these examples, it is easy to see how the price of these more significant dental procedures far outweigh those of preventative care.

Denture Services and Types of Dentures

February 28, 2023
denture

A person's full set of lost teeth can be replaced with dentures from Summerlin Dental Solutions in only one visit. There are many different denture alternatives to choose from, and which one you go with will depend on how many of your teeth are missing, whether you want to use dental implants in conjunction with dentures, and your long-term objectives.

Learning more about the advantages and disadvantages of various denture designs will give you greater confidence when it comes to formulating a plan for the restoration of your smile. Knowing the different ways may give you some type of indication as to the course you decide to take as there is no response that can be categorically deemed correct or incorrect.

Various Dentures Designs are Available

You can get a wide range of denture designs in Summerlin depending on where you go, including some of the following:

Traditional dentures, often known as "plates," are full mouth prosthetics that replace all the teeth on a single arch at once. The term "plates" also applies to these dentures. Traditional dentures are available in a wide range of materials and "levels" of aesthetic detail, depending on how much priority you place on looks.

In order to create a watertight seal between the denture and your mouth, the dental appliance is positioned such that it fits directly on top of the gum tissues in your mouth. An instant loading denture may provide you the chance to avoid going without teeth while your permanent prosthesis is being created if you still need to have teeth extracted. This is so that a denture with immediate loading can be fitted with teeth right away following an extraction.

Complete dentures Consider having detachable partial dentures if you are missing several consecutive teeth. These are quite efficient. Particularly if a treatment like an implant-supported bridge is not an option for you. In order to fit around the patient's natural teeth, partial dentures are detachable dental prosthesis that are fastened in place by clasps or minute extensions.

Partials can be set up in one of two ways. One choice is a chromium foundation, which is exceptionally sturdy and capable of supporting several artificial teeth at once across the prosthesis. The alternative is a partial denture composed of "Valplast," an acrylic material that is a little more flexible than metal and is intended to blend in with your gum tissues. Acrylic partials are often the most efficient alternative for replacing a single tooth, whether it be a molar or premolar, as long as there are healthy teeth on either side.

Implants or overdentures that are secured in place — An overdenture differs from a regular denture in that it features "locators" or "snaps" on the underside, whereas a regular denture does not. These locators are made to attach to similar dental implants that have been placed at certain locations inside the mouth. It is feasible to convert more modern traditional dentures into snap-on dentures on an individual basis and depending on the situation.

Overdentures can still be removed. They do, however, use dental implants to prevent the prosthesis from sliding, slipping, or swaying during the day. This technique works well for people who may have lost bone mass or have a small bone ridge, both of which make it difficult to properly fit a standard denture to the patient's mouth.

Even implants used to stabilize dentures still require nightly removal. However, unlike some other implant restorations, they won't last a lifetime. Only two to four implants are needed for each denture because they only serve as an additional source of support.

Dentures with permanent implants — These particular types of dentures are also known as "hybrid" or "All-on-4" implant dentures, depending on where you are and who you ask. This is because they employ a single set of artificial teeth to replace every tooth in a patient's mouth. They are essentially a hybrid that combines traditional dentures with a more streamlined design while maintaining the permanency of dental implants. These dental devices cannot be taken out of the mouth like overdentures can. There is no way to take them down once they are set up.

Surgery techniques like the All-on-4 appliance While speaking, remember to keep your smile curved, but avoid letting your "plate" touch the roof of your mouth. You don't need to be concerned about anything slipping or rubbing against them because they are firmly affixed to the implants.

Another choice is dentures for aesthetic reasons.

Dentures

Working with a skilled aesthetic dentist is in your best interest if you want to get the most out of the denture design process. Your appliance affects how your profile appears because it is also in charge of supporting your delicate face tissues, like your lips and cheeks. Because they achieve a fuller-looking skin tone once all of their missing teeth are restored, some patients even go so far as to say that their new dentures give them a "facelift." This is so because dentures are made to take the place of a person's entire set of teeth.

Not only may dentures replace lost face volume, but they can also be customized to produce the most aesthetically pleasing outcomes. Our Summerlin cosmetic dentist will specify the details of your denture and will also select the shade for each individual tooth. The secret is to pick colors and contours that look natural and go well with your own features; this will make sure that your smile is both lovely and seems to have a natural appearance.

Should I have false teeth or dentures?

One of our primary goals is helping you maintain your natural teeth as long as possible, and we will do all in our power to help you do so. Therefore, it is advised that you refrain from having your teeth taken if they are healthy, sturdy, and capable of being repaired in ways other than those mentioned above. As an alternative, Dr. Cohan can help the affected teeth heal and then replace the nearby teeth with a dental bridge, a partial denture, or an implant.

We conduct smile reconstruction in Summerlin.

Poor Oral Health Could Be Putting You at Greater Risk For Stroke, Study Finds

February 15, 2023

Research suggests that taking care of your mouth can lower your risk for stroke.

oral health

  • A new study shows that poor oral health may contribute to declines in brain health, specifically increasing your risk for stroke.
  • Oral health affects your overall health, beyond just your mouth.
  • Experts explain the findings and how to take better care of your mouth.

Taking better care of one's oral health has been linked by some research to a lower risk of stroke. Recent research suggests that poor dental hygiene can increase the risk of stroke and other brain-related health problems. The condition of your teeth and gums affects your general health in many ways.

Dental experts offer their insights on how to improve your oral hygiene and analyze the results. You might not think it matters much how often you floss, but new research suggests that taking care of your teeth and gums is important for your brain's health, too.

Presented at the recent annual meeting of the American Stroke Association, a new study looked into the connection between good oral hygiene and brain function. Forty thousand people without a history of stroke were studied from the UK Biobank. All 105 participants were tested for genetic variants known to increase their risk of tooth decay, tooth loss, or the need for dentures. The time period covered by the screening was from 2014 to 2021.

Damage to the brain's structure and white matter, among other indicators of poor health, were examined in the MRI scan images. (Your brain's white matter is a complex network of nerve fibers that carries messages and information between different parts of your brain and facilitates communication between them. White matter gets its name from the white color of the myelin insulation that surrounds the nerve fibers in the tissue, hence the name.

Unnoticeable symptoms are the hallmark of a silent stroke. The severity of damage caused by a silent stroke was shown to be greater in persons who had a family history of tooth decay, tooth loss, or denture wear. MRI scans revealed an increase in white matter damage of 24% due to this event. People whose dental health was poor overall due to genetic causes also had more structural damage to their brains. The MRI scans showed a 43% increase in structural damage as a result of this deterioration.

Postdoctoral fellow in neurology at Yale University School of Medicine and lead author Cyprien Rivier, M.D., M.S., was quoted in an American Heart Association press release as saying, "Studying oral health is especially important because poor oral health happens frequently and is an easily modifiable risk factor—everyone can effectively improve oral health with minimal time and financial investment." The investigation is complete, and his analysis of the results is as follows. Having bad teeth may have negative effects on your brain. As a result, we need to pay special attention to our dental hygiene because it has far-reaching consequences.

Although promising, more information needs to be acquired, ideally through clinical studies, to prove that boosting dental health in the population will lead to brain health gains.

Do you know the warning signs of poor dental health?

Poor oral health is typically characterized as an imbalance between the health of the teeth, gums, and other tissues in the mouth. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including poor oral hygiene practices, an unhealthy diet, and a lack of access to dental care.

Poor oral health can show up in a number of ways.

Poor oral health can lead to a number of different conditions, including tooth decay and cavities, periodontal disease, gum disease, and even oral cancer. Pain, bleeding gums, swelling gums, loose teeth, bad breath, and visible growths on the teeth or in the mouth are all indications of gum disease. Teeth that are chipped, cracked, or otherwise damaged are another sign. A white tongue or a white filmy appearance on the tongue is another warning indication of poor dental health.

In what ways can maintaining good oral hygiene benefit cognitive function?

The mouth is home to both helpful and harmful germs. She says that the hardening of the arteries, blood clots, and strokes are all connected to oral health issues like plaque buildup, infections, and inflammation caused by damaged teeth. Damaged teeth increase the risk of plaque buildup, infection, and inflammation.

The bacteria that cause gum disease (periodontal disease) can enter the circulation and go to the brain, where they can cause inflammation and alter the brain's protective barrier. As a different but connected issue, this has to be addressed. Inflammation has been linked to cognitive decline through interfering with the brain's ability to function normally. It is one of the ways in which he stresses that poor dental health can increase the risk of getting Alzheimer's disease or another kind of dementia. Stroke and other cardiovascular ailments have also been linked to gum disease, and both of these can have negative effects on brain function.

How can I better care for my teeth?

The following are some of the recommendations our specialists have made in order to help you take better care of your dental health and avoid the potentially disastrous impacts that poor oral health can have on your body and brain.

  • Brush your teeth for two full minutes, twice daily, and pay extra attention to your tongue.
  • Remove harmful plaque and bacteria from in between your teeth by flossing daily.
  • See your dentist on a consistent basis for checkups, cleanings, and screenings for issues like oral cancer, periodontal disease, dental caries, sleep apnea, and jaw joint issues (TMJ).
  • Eat a balanced diet consisting of a range of solid foods.
  • Drinking with a straw can help minimize the amount of time that sugar from drinks like soda, concentrated juice, and carbonated water spends in contact with your teeth.
  • Do not drink too much.
  • Avoid using any kind of tobacco product, including traditional cigarettes and electronic cigarettes.
  • Mouthwash can help get rid of plaque and bacteria, and mouthguards are a must for those who play contact sports.
  • Give a water flosser or electric toothbrush some serious thinking.

Basic requirements

The state of your mouth health affects every other part of your body. Similar to the rest of your body, your mouth receives a constant supply of oxygenated blood. Harmful germs that arise as a result of poor tooth health can therefore spread to other parts of the body and create health issues. The risk of cognitive decline, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and even pregnancy gingivitis are all impacted by this, she says.

Hormonal shifts during pregnancy might make your gums more susceptible to plaque, resulting in irritation and bleeding, a disease known as pregnancy gingivitis. Brushing twice a day and flossing once a day can help avoid pregnancy gingivitis.

Good management of gum disease/periodontitis, cavities, and overall oral health care, as well as the management of risk factors like refraining from smoking, will lower inflammatory indicators and so lessen the likelihood of systemic disease progression. Caring for your teeth and gums in a way that keeps your mouth healthy and free of disease it's crucial to your overall health to practice good oral hygiene habits like brushing and flossing your teeth daily, visiting the dentist on a regular basis, and not smoking. This will reduce your risk of developing oral health issues and the complications they can cause for your brain and heart.

4 Questions About Dental Sealants, Answered

February 10, 2023
sealant

In response to your four questions about dental sealants, the following is the information:

Caries, also known as tooth decay, is the form of chronic disease that affects children in the United States at a rate that is higher than any other. In the state of Washington, children in kindergarten have a cavity rate of nearly forty percent, while third graders have a cavity rate of nearly sixty-eight percent. Cavities are a typical dental issue, but the good news is that they do not have to be a cause for concern because they can be prevented.

In addition to brushing, flossing, and going in for checkups on a regular basis, dental sealants are another important measure that can be taken to protect children's teeth from developing cavities. Sealants can be applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. Nevertheless, despite the significance of dental sealants, many parents do not have a good understanding of what they are, how they work, whether or not they are safe, and what they do to protect the teeth and oral health of children. This is a problem because dental sealants are important.

What exactly are dental sealants, and why are they essential for children to have at their dentist's office?

What exactly are the components that dental sealants are made of?

A dental sealant is a very thin protective coating that is painted onto the chewing surfaces of your child's back teeth, also known as molars. This helps to prevent cavities and protect the teeth from harmful bacteria. This helps to prevent cavities from developing. Sealants are used to fill the deep grooves that make it difficult for children to properly clean their teeth with a toothbrush. This makes it more important for children to have sealants than ever before. This offers additional defense against the development of cavities and tooth decay.

Cavities do not materialize out of thin air; rather, they are the end result of a process that involves gradual erosion. The bacteria that are already present in our mouths can obtain food from the sugar that is present in the foods that we eat. This process leaves harmful acids behind, which gradually wear away at our enamel and have a significant negative effect on our dental health. As a result, this process has a significant negative impact on our dental health.

Sealants have a lifespan of up to nine years and protect against some acids by acting as a shield against their harmful effects. Sealants do, however, lose some of their effectiveness over time (and can even fall off), which is why it is essential to have routine checkups with the dentist and to continue practicing good oral hygiene habits such as brushing and flossing. In addition, it is important to remember to avoid eating foods that are high in sugar or carbohydrates.

Why Do Children Need to Have Dental Sealants Applied to Their Teeth?

It is critical to begin taking measures to avoid developing tooth decay at a young age. Cavities in baby teeth can lead to cavities in permanent teeth, which can cause issues with a person's oral health for the rest of their lives. Cavities in baby teeth can also cause pain in the gums. In children, the prevention of tooth decay even before it starts to form in their teeth is one of the most important roles that dental sealants play in the process of setting them up for success.

sealants

Sealants, which can be visualized as miniature levies the size of teeth, act as an additional barrier protecting our children's teeth from the gradual erosion that is caused by bacteria and acids in the mouth. Studies that were conducted by the American Dental Association found that the use of sealants brought about a reduction in the likelihood of developing cavities that was as high as 80 percent.

During the course of a routine cleaning appointment at the dentist's office, the sealant that will be applied to your child's teeth can be done so. It is a simple process that, in the vast majority of instances, entails carrying out the steps as follows:

After the teeth have been brushed and allowed to dry, they are given a second rinsing. • The back teeth are brushed, and then they are allowed to dry. • The back teeth are brushed, and then they are allowed to dry. A brush is used to apply the liquid sealant to the tooth, after which it is allowed to dry and harden in the mouth in a matter of minutes or so. In order to speed up the bonding and hardening process, there are instances in which a curing light is utilized as an aid.

After the sealant has been applied to your child's teeth, it is essential for them to keep up with their regular oral hygiene routine. This routine should include brushing, flossing, and using a fluoride rinse at least once per day.

When is the Optimal Time for Children to Have Sealants Placed in Their Teeth?

child

The American Dental Association (ADA) suggests using sealants on children between the ages of 5 and 14. Dental sealants are something you should discuss with your child's dentist when they are between the ages of 5 and 7 and getting their first permanent molars. This is the ideal time to get dental sealants for your child. An additional set of dental sealants can be applied to a child's teeth when they get their second set of permanent molars, which typically occurs between the ages of 11 and 14, according to the American Dental Association.

Another preventative measure that can be beneficial for adolescents who are at an increased risk of developing cavities is the use of dental sealants. Sealants are applied to the teeth.

How Much Does the Cost of Sealants Get Covered by Dental Insurance?

It is considered a preventative measure to have sealants placed on one's teeth, in the same vein as having routine dental examinations and receiving fluoride treatments. The vast majority of dental plans offer comprehensive coverage for preventive services and dental sealants; as a result, your child will be able to receive all of the protective sealants that they need at a cost that is minimal to none.
