March is National Nutrition Month!

While there is no need to wait to start eating correctly, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has designated March as the month in which everyone should pay particular attention to what they put into their bodies. The Academy has designated the month of March as "National Nutrition Awareness Month" in order to raise awareness about what people consume.

What You Shouldn't Eat

Specifically, the Academy of Dentistry reminds out that the foods you consume have a direct impact on the health of your teeth and in particular on tooth decay. Bacteria depend on carbohydrates to survive and reproduce. That is why Dr. Marianne Cohan and our staff at Summerlin Dental Solutions advise our patients to limit their intake of candy and other sweets as much as possible. They are made up of simple carbohydrates that provide food for the bacteria in your mouth and contribute to tooth decay.

It's the hidden sugars, on the other hand, that will set you back. Make it a practice to check food labels and seek for goods that have been sweetened with added sugar. This covers components that have the suffix "ose" at the end of their names. When it comes to nutrition, these foods are mostly useful for feeding a sweet craving and not much more than that.

What You Should Consume

Turn to meals that are not only delicious but also beneficial to your dental health. Foods such as dairy products, for example, supply the body with nutrients that help to maintain tooth enamel. Protein-rich foods include phosphorus, which is a mineral that is essential for dental health.

You also can't go wrong by including a variety of colors in your daily diet. Fruits and vegetables make for a visually appealing dish as well as a nutritious dinner. When eating acidic fruits such as oranges or even tomatoes, exercise care since the acid may destroy tooth enamel over time. Instead of consuming these meals on their own, it is preferable to incorporate them in a meal as a side dish.

You should keep in mind that excellent nutrition is something you should be concerned about all year, not just during National Nutrition Month. A pleasant reminder that eating healthy is a proactive step in maintaining your oral health is provided by the month of March.
